Unfortunately, there are many testing methods and different flammability standards depending on material application and end use. Therefore, there are different ways of approaching the whole flammability issue. In this work, different approaches for analyzing the fire resistance of leather are examined: (i) influence of the type of tannage, (ii) influence of the type of leather, (iii) influence of the type of retannage, (iv) influence of the type of fatliquor, and (v) influence of the use of flame retardants. The results indicate that leather presents natural fire resistance. However, the type of leather, type of tannage, retannage and fatliquor affect the flammability behavior of leather. In addition, the use of flame retardants slightly improves the smouldering properties of leather. Two different systems of analysis have been tested. In bath methods, salt is removed by stirring the hide with deionized water and analysing the resulting salt bath. The first method is based on the measurement of the chloride amount in the salt bath by the Mohr method. The second method is based on measuring the density of the salt bath. The second method has yielded very good results. Also, it does not require the use of chemical reagents and the necessary equipment is common in all tanneries. Sulfurique, AcideIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : A hide preservation method based on salt and formic or sulfuric acid has been developed. This method allows 74% salt savings compared to the salt consumption in the conventional salting system. World-avide such savings would involve approximately 3 million tons of salt. This salt is now eliminated as contaminated solid waste or dissolved in residual waters. The change in the preservation system cuts the expenses by at least 48 %. Results show that the new method is effective for short-term preservations (1 month) as leathers of equal or superior quality are obtained. This method may also be used in longer term preservations as long as the elongation and the tensile strength requirements are not a priority in the final article.
