The newer waterproof fatliquors have helped tanners to produce waterproof leathers in greater quantity and quality. However, there is still a tremendous need to finish waterproof leathers to upgrade leathers, improve hand and temper, as well as, impart special affects to these leathers. The surface tension of these waterproof leathers makes them difficult to finish without the aid of surfactant flow aids and solvent penetrators. Problems occur as these products often detract from the waterproofness by way of lower Maeser flexes. The objective of this paper was to determine what class of surfactants would allow the finishers to finish waterproof leathers without leathers without harming Maeser flexes.
