In the present study various polyurethane dispersions were synthesised using different polyester diols as soft segments. The effect of type of polyester diol synthesised, on the surface and bulk mechanical properties were examined. It was observed that the number of alkylene groups present in the repeat unit of polyester soft segment (PESS) and its structure had a pronounced effect on the mechanical properties in addition to its molecular weight. With a proper selection of the soft segment, it is possible to fine-tune properties of aqueous polyurethane dispersion coatings with respect to the final application. |
