Indanthrone is one of the oldest synthetic colorants, having been synthesised as an anthraquinone vat dye in 1901 by R. Bohn. It was soon recognised, however, that it could also be used as a pigment in paints and enamesl.
As a dye, it is known as C.I. Vat Blue 4 and as a pigment it is known aq C.I. Pigment Blue 60, 69800. Indanthrone Blue is a bright, reddish blue pigment with notable all-around fastness properties. It has effective durability in both solid and metallic finishes, shwoing little fading in pale shades and has less tendency for bronzing in full and strong shaes than phthalocyanine blue pigments. It is highly durable, even in light white reductions, making it particularly attractive in areas where phthalocyanine blue is not weather-fast enough for the application. Indanthrone Blue is also fast to organic solvents, acids and alkali, and is heat stable up to 200°C. |
