The imminent ban of environmentally harmful tributyltin (TBT) and tin based paint products has been the cause of a major change in the antifouling industry. Fouling organisms such as barnacles, tube worms and algae, which accumulate on any submerged surface, greatly increase drag, and reduce speed and fule consumption of the vessel other mechanical damages have also been reported due to fouling. A variety of paints were developed in mid 1800s, which were generally based on copper oxide arsenic and mercuric oxide as popular antifoulants. Antifoulants are one of the many additives usually incorporated within the topcoat paint of marine protective coating system. Today's marine coatings must provide protection and performanceunder extremely harsh conditions. Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=8325

This paper describes various physical and chemical properties of different powder coating films like epoxy, pure polyester and epoxy polyester hybrid. In this paper an attempt is made to correlate the properties of different powder coating films and also the influence of type of resins are discussed. The film characteristics of novolac based epoxy esters of different oil length were studied and comparison was made with the film characteristics of epoxy esters prepared from bisphenol-A based epoxy resin.
It was observed that all the films had dried within 24 hours and were tack-free the desired film forming characteristics. All the epoxy ester films passed the flexibility test on 1/4 inch mandrel. The scratch hardness of the films decreased with the increasing oil length irrespective of the phenolic source of the epoxy resin. The water resistance and alkali resistance of the epoxy ester films showed a definite pattern vis a vis the epoxy esters prepared from novolac and bisphenol-A. While the water resistance of the epoxy esters improved with the increasing oil length of the esters, yhe alkali resistance decreased with the increasing oil length. Both alkali resistance and water resistance improved with the higher proportion of formaldehyde in the novolac used as starting a material for the preparation of epoxy ester. Both the alkali and water resistance of the novolac based epoxy esters were superior to the epoxy esters based on bisphenol-A. All the epoxy ester films showed very goog acid-resistance.Note de contenu : - Experimental : Preparation of novolac resins - Preparation of epoxy resins - Preparation of epoxy esters - Preparation of coatings - Evaluation of film characteristics

The novolac epoxy resins werepreparedby using three different ratios ofphenol to formaldehyde. The films of prepared epoxy esters with different oil lengths, were evaluated for various performance tests and were compared with those of bisphenol-A based epoxy resin. All the films dried faster and took a maximum of 13 hrs to dry tack free. Epoxy esters prepared from novolac epoxy resins having higher phenol to formaldehyde ratios showed better scratch hardness than those with lower ratios. Also, epoxy esters with shortest oil length possessed best scratch hardness. All the films were highly flexible. The studies showed that alkali resistance of epoxy esters is slightly better than water resistance. The water resistance increased with the increase in the oil length and also with increase in the phenol to formaldehyde ratio in novolac epoxy resins. In the case of alkali resistance, it increased with the increase in phenol - formaldehyde ratio and it decreased with the increase in oil length. The acid resistance of all the samples were excellent. Langues : Anglais (eng) Tags : 'Rayonnement UV' Durcissement 'Modification chimique' 'Epoxyde résine' Liant Peinture 'Matériau revêtement' Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Normally epoxy resin has versatile applications in coating, adhesives and electrical industries by chemical curing. The other alternative emerging field in the area of curing is by radiation, for which U. V., E.B., visible, microwave, I.R., X-ray, γ-ray are used. Because U.V. curing contributes to air pollution control, conserves energy, improves cure speed and reduces capital cost by space saving and economical equipment purchase, it has become the preferred technology in many industrial coating, ink and adhesives applications.
