Sous-marinsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Examination of the fire-retardant performance of candidate paints for shipboard use, namely a solvent-based expoxy polyster, fire-retardant alkyd and chlorinated alkyd and a water-based gloss acrylic latex, has been undertaken by cone calorimetry, radiant heating, reverse panel heating, direct flame impingement, and limiting oxygen index. By all techniques, the chlorinated alkyd has superior properties while nonchlorinated alternatives pose significant problems in relation to fire propagation. The relatively low amount of hydrogen chloride (∼0.3%-mass per initial mass) evaluated during evaluation of chlorinated alkyd paind by cone calorimetric combustion and its outstanding fire-retardant properties have resulted in its being reconsidered and accepted for use in new Australian submarines Note de contenu : - MATERIALS

Tension superficielleIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A stratifying coating based on chlorinated rubber and epoxy resin paint blend has been prepared. Chlorinated rubber is pigmented with rutile grade titanium dioxide and epoxy resin is pigmented with red iron oxide. Different types of curing agents on the stratification behavior of pigmented chlorinated rubber/epoxy resin has been studied. Surface tension as well as its polar & disperse component for individual hardener has been determined. Stratification occurs only with polyamide resin hardener, used as epoxy curing agent. Cross section of dried coating film is analyzed under optical microscope, then further characterized by FTIR, HATR, SEM-EDX, X-ray mapping. After stratification, two distinct coating layers are obtained with titanium dioxide pigmented chlorinated at the air interface and iron oxide pigmented epoxy resin towards substrate.
