The design, construction and testing of the 30-m blade was completed under a phase-II small business innovation research (SBIR) grant. However, the development of thi prototype included numerous previous research projects concerning the application of carbon fibers to wind turbine blades, including a multi-year program of coupon and-sub-scale testing funded through Sandia National Laboratories.
This paper begins with a review ofthe historic trends and current industry status concerning carbon fiber usage in wind turbine blades. Results from earlier research programs are reviewed in the context of their influence on the development of the 30-m prototype. Data for the 30-m development process are presented, including configurations considered and associated trade-off studies on material and process combinations.
The final design and manufacturing concept of the 30-m blade is presented. Static testing of the blade was conducted at the National Wind Technology center (NWTC) in september, 2007, and the blade failed below design expectations. The paper presents these results, as well as insights gained through post-mortem inspections of the blade. Conclusions are drawn concerning the performance of the carbon-fiber material in the as built blade, including potential process/tooling improvements that would allow the material to reach its expected performance level.Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=7156
