The specific challenges of how the principles of weathering testing can be applied to durability testing of PV modules are discussed by Dipl-Phys Andreas Riedl, Atlas Material Testing Technology, who suggests one approach to an appropriate test programme.
Photovoltaic (PV) modules combine a variety of materials and components like glass, encapsulants, backsheets, adhesives, framing and fixtures, junction boxes and cables. Each component reacts to the impact of solar radiation, heat and moisture in its specific way and contributes to the overall weather ageing of the complete module. Due to the complex nature of the system, the high lifetime expectation and the size of the test specimens, weathering testing of PV modules is both a technical and economic challenge. Nevertheless, appropriate accelerated weathering test methods for complete PV modules, as well as their individuel mate-rials and components are required to back up warranty statements, support bankability, ensure return of investment and avoid liability claims. |

- ENVIRONMENTAL DURABILITY TESTING OF PV MODULES : The laboratory test equipment used has to be big enough tohold a full module - All relevant stresses (heat, moisture, radiation, salt,freeze-thaw, corrosion, etc.) have to be applied on the same module under test, as they are in the real world - The primary weather factors heat, moisture and radiation have to be applied simultaneously and in a cyclic manner - The test programme has to be long enough to achieve sufficient accumulation of stresses and damage - The PV modules have to be operated during weathering testing - In addition to the laboratory accelerated test, identical modules should be exposed outdoors under benchmark conditions for reference |
