In emulsion polymerization, reactor type and operational condition have a marked influence on polymer properties such as distribution of molecular weight, microstructure of polymer and particle size. Reaction engineering for emulsion polymerization requires understanding of fluid dynamics and mixing, heat transfer, process monitoring, colloid science, microeconomics and the mechanisms and kinetics of the multiple chemical and physical reaction steps. Incorporating the developed knowledge in an integrated product process development effort would help to reduce costs, decrease time to market and increase product quality. Various types of reactors and their modification to satisfy the necessity of quality product have been reviewed in this paper. |
