Note de contenu : - Reactivity among tannins and ferric cation as a function of pH

In order to achieve such special decorative effects, metal pigments are applied also in printing inks. The possibilities these decorative inks offer to the graphic art industries are of great multiplicity and still have not been exhausted.
The following is a view on production and properties of the metal effect pigments as well as the resulting problems concerning the different printing applications.
The production of metal pigments has long tradition; it has developed from the gold beaters craft which existed already in 1000 B.C. The waste resulting from the gold leaf production was pulverized in a mortar, pasted with a binder and used as paint. This process was also applied on other metal leaves.
For historical reasons, metal effect pigments are therefore called "silver" - and "gold bronze", although - from the metallurgical point of view - they have nothing to do with gold, silver or bronze. They are made of aluminium, copper and brass pigments (copper - zinc-alloy).Note de contenu : - Copper and zinc for gold bronze pigments, aluminium for silver shades

Four selective melamine-formaldehyde resins were synthesized under different melamine, formaldehyde, butanol ratios and pH. The functional groups of the final resins were characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy, Proton -Fourier Transform Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy, along with other conventional chemical analysis. The effect of reaction conditions on molecular weight and its distribution were studied using Gel Permeation Chromatography. Further substantiation were carried out after curing with alkyd as well as with acrylic and subsequent correlation with the film hardness. Scanning Electron Microscopy was used to identify incompatibility. Based on these experiments author of this paper, it was confirmed that the structure and curing behaviour of melamine-formaldehyde resin can be predicted using various reaction conditions. The present work will also help in establishing a relation between the selection of melamine-formaldehyde resin with known structure as a cross-linker in the field of paint industry.
