Quinophthalone colorants derive their name from the parent compound quinophthalone, synthesized in the year 1882 by Jacobsen by heating quinaldine (2-methylquinoline) with phthalic anhydride at about 220° for a few hours in presence of zinc chloride. Constitutional aspects of quinophthalone was studied and established by Methta, Eibner, Hofmann, Kuhn, Baer and others. They represent small and old but still very important range of methine colorants. They have a long history as dyes, mainly as disperse dyes, acid dyes and paper dyes. |
