Of course there are some drawbacks associated with shellac which have limited their application. In order to remove these drawbacks of shellac varnishes, shellac-glycol compounds from shellac, ethylene-glycol, and polyethylene glycols were prepared. Phosphorous penta-oxide has been used as the catalyst. Two series of compounds, first containing shellac-ethylene glycol and the second shellac-ethylene and polyethylene glycol mixture, were prepared by esterifying with various monobasic acids from safflower oil, isomerised linseed oil, dehydrated castor oil, tung oil, rosin and rosin modified products. Each series comprises of eleven samples (Twenty two in all). Varnishes from these esterified products were prepared to study and to evaluate the film properties. These varnishes were then tested according to I.S. Specifications. It was observed that tung oil fatty acid varnishes exhibited the best results followed by the varnishes from dehydrated castor oil and isomerised linseed oil fatty acids. Safflower oil fatty acids varnishes have also been found satisfactory. Varnishes from rosin and rosin modified products were the least satisfactory. Both the series yielded products of almost parallel film forming properties such as baking period, hardness, flexibility, resistance to various chemicals, etc. Out-door exposure test of the films had also been carried out. Furthermore, the results of exposure test have shown that the compositions containing fatty acids possess better weather resistance than those having rosin or rosin modified products. Ceci a été relié aux propriétés élongationnelles uniaxiales de ces solutions polymères et ce résultat mène à la question suivante : un jet 2D en serait-il autant affecté ? Dans le but de générer un jet 2D, nous avons étudié l'impact de cylindres courts (longueur / Diamètre = 10) sur différentes surfaces liquides. Le jet obtenu est loin d'être 2D et, de façon fort inattendue, il se présente dans un plan perpendiculaire à la longueur de l'objet ! Cependant, il est montré que non seulement la hauteur de ce jet peut être réduite par l'ajout d'une très faible quantité de polymère mais que, de plus, la forme de ce jet est sensible à la nature même des chaînes polymères introduites. The derivatives were characterized by means of FT-IR and elemental analysis, and evaluated for laundry anti-redeposition performance, alone and in systems with mannanase and/or cellulase enzymes. Optimum anti-redeposition performance was observed at degrees of substitution of around 0.15. Mannanase was found to have a negative effect on sulfoethyl locust bean gum derivatives’ performance although a system comprising sulfoethyl locust bean gum derivative and cellulase was found to be complementary.
