In this study, detailed characteristics of sensitive skin were investigated using non-invasive methods. Senssitive skin was classified into three different types based on their particular characteristics. Type I was defined as the low barrier function group. Type II was defined as the inflammation group with normal barrier function and inflammatory changes. Type III was specified as the pseudo healthy group in terms of normal barrier function and no inflammatory change. In all types, a high content of nerve growth factor was observed in the stratum corneum. Both in Type II and III, the sensitivity to electric stimuli was high. Moreover, a treatment system appropriate for type I was examined. Topical application of cosmetics containing niacinamide significantly improved Type I sensitive skin, while there was no effect observed in either Type II or III showing normal barrier function. These data suggest that sensitive skin could be classified into three groups each with particular characteristics and an appropriate approach should be taken to improve sensitive skin with consideration given to the underlying mechanism of skin sensitivity. DMTA is a non-resonant, forced vibration type of device capable of operating over a wide frequency range and which measures the viscoelastic response of materials under a sinusoidally oscillating stress for both supported and unsupported materials. It provides a valuable link between chemistry, morphology and performance properties of materials and its application ranges from the measurement of bulk viscoelastic properties to sophisticated analysis of the kinetics of the crosslinking reaction. The interpretations and application of dynamic data can be utilized to calculate cross-link density (XLD), elastically effective chain length between crosslinks (Mc) and the glass transition temperature of the coating materials. The results and information obtained from DMTA can be correlated with other coating film properties. The present paper describes the utility of DMTA in developing coating materials. The relevant phenomena, chemical reactions, solvent diffusion and evaporation, gelation, vitrification, network mobility restrictions, and crosslinking, are quantified and a mathematical model for a curing film is presented, which does not violate the local volume balance. For model verification, a previous investigation with a polyisocyanate and a polyol in methyl amyl ketone solvent, catalyzed by an organotin compound, was selected. In contrast to earlier modelling studies, simulations can match and explain detailed experimental data. For exemplification, simulations are used to analyse the influence of the various rate phenomena on the behavior of the solvent-based polyisocyanate/polyol film.
