New challenges in chrome-free leathers : development of wet-bright process / Anna Bacardit in JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN LEATHER CHEMISTS ASSOCIATION (JALCA), Vol. CIX, N° 4 (04/2014)
[article]
Titre : New challenges in chrome-free leathers : development of wet-bright process Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Anna Bacardit, Auteur ; J. Armengol, Auteur ; S. van der Burgh, Auteur ; Lluis Ollé, Auteur Année de publication : 2014 Article en page(s) : p. 117-124 Note générale : Bibliogr.

This new process gives leather that is free of chromium, aldehydes, aldehyde precursors and organic solvents. It is the application of a new system based on a product designated Tanfor T™ from the manufacturer Kemira ChemSolutions. When compared to existing traditional wet leather processes, there are economic and environmental advantages resulting from the use of this new system. Also, the mineral character of the new product system offers leathers with high dye affinity; thus enabling very bright colors in all leather applications. We believe this leather offers such perfect dyeing properties because of the brilliant whiteness of the wet-bright intermediate substrate. Wet-white (tannage)Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : A novel wet-white tanning approach based on combination tanning with tannic acid (TA) and Laponite nanoclay has been proposed. Thermal stability measurements show that the introduction of Laponite nanoclay gives an obvious increase in the shrinkage temperature (Ta) cf TA-tanned leather, implying the presence of the synergistic effect between TA and Laponite nanoclay in the combination tanning process. The optimized tanning system, i.e. 20% TA combination tanned with 3% Laponite in one-bath for 3 hours al 25°C and final pH '-3.5, confers wet-white leathers with Ta above 89°C, and good storage stability. The introduction of Laponite nanoclay facilitates the fixation of TA in the wet-white leather. Scanning electron microscopie (SEM) results show that the combination tanned leathers exhibit fine isolated collagen fibre networks in cornparison with that of solo TA and solo Laponite tanned leather. The presence of Laponite nanoclay not only improves the mechanical strength of the resulting leather, but also gives an ultraviolet protection property. Tannage Résumé : Trials described in this paper showed that Perval-10, the oxidised degradation product of valonia extract using 10 % H2O2(w/w), had a synergistic effect with Cr(III). The combination tannages using 5 7 % Perval-10 and 1.0-1.5 % Cr2O3 produced leather with shrinkage temperatures above 100°C, higher than that of the corresponding chrome tannage and a combination tannage using 15 % valonia extract. The synergistic reaction of Perval-10 and Al(III) was not as effective as with Cr(III), but still produced leather with a shrinkage temperature above 100°C, when 7 % Perval-10 was used. The tanning sequence in combination tannages using Perval-10 is not critical, perhaps due to its moderate astringency and rapid penetration rate. The vegetable tanned characterer of leathers tanned by combination tannages using Perval-10 was largely eliminated, so that the tannages are suitable for producint quality leathers similar to a chrome tannage.
