Alternative finishes challenging stainless steel are emerging as a highly marketable feature. Today’s unprecedented consumer demand for customizable appliance colors and textures (with decorative hardware finishes) that are integral to warm and inviting home interiors is likened to the wildly popular 1970s “harvest gold era.” Years of above GDP growth in new construction and home remodeling are drivers. Remodeling demand, in particular, is partly driven by home renovation-themed TV shows featuring celebrity hosts who, year after year, inspire multigenerational audiences to improve and update their living spaces.
As outlined in the scope of the U.S. Market Analysis’ Chapter 10, Appliance Finishes, original equipment manufacturer (OEM) appliance finishes include powder coatings, coil coatings, and liquid coatings. Appliance finishes are used to protect and decorate interior and exterior plastic and most metal substrates (e.g., ranges, freezers, washers), heating equipment (furnaces), industrial furnaces and ovens, and air conditioning equipment. Stainless steel, by comparison, was historically unpainted but is now commonly coated with an anti-fingerprint coating, while the newer black stainless appliances have a unique finish process that varies by OEM.Note de contenu : - APPLIANCE DESIGN AND HOME INTERIORS : Customer segmentation - Appliance design and finishes - In-home consumer research

Spectroscopie de réflectanceIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Surface wetting and spectrophotometric reflectance are important properties that are commonly used in the characterisation of the products arising in the surface coating-related industries. In this study, these two techniques were used as simple methods of monitoring the curing behavior of coatings of interest to the packaging sector. The fluid coatings were cured at different temperatures (160, 180, 200, 220, and 240°C) for 10 minutes.
In an extended study, the curing of the coatings was also carried out at 200°C for different time periods (5, 10 and 15 minutes, respectively). The results show that the techniques that were developed can be used as quality control procedures to monitor the extent to which the coatings are cured. Clear correlations were noted between instrumental measurements and visual assessments of the coatings. These techniques can be used to establish the consequences of employing variations in the curing conditions of the coatings because they lead to variation in molecular weight, structure development, film formation, cross-linking and interlocking in the coatings, as a consequence of increasing either the curing time or the curing temperature.Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHODS : Materials - Coatings application and curing - Contact angle measurement and reflectance spectrophotometry

Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Electrospraying is an effective method of producing functional layers on substrates. By means of electrospraying, it is possible to create uniform and fine droplets that attract to the substrate without being blown away by the electric field formed by the nozzle and the substrate. The uniformity of the coated layer is rarely affected by a fluid drying process (such as Marangoni flow on substrates) as the size of droplets can reach micron/nano-levels and the solvents in the droplets can evaporate quickly. Therefore, the electrospray process is often referred to as ‘dry deposition.’ However, when an electrospray system with multinozzles is considered for the faster process of producing large substrates, the drying process may be completely different than for a single-nozzle system. In addition, crosstalk and nonuniform spray volume from each nozzle can pose an additional problem that needs to be addressed. In this study, we proposed a multinozzle electrospray system and process to average the spray amount heterogeneity and achieve layer uniformity in a fast-drying process. Finally, we demonstrated the effectiveness of our proposed methods by fabricating superhydrophobic layers on a highly insulating substrate.
