ThermochromieIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Thermochromic dyes and pigments offer significant potential for functional and aesthetic design of smart textile materials and in the area of the leather industry potential application of thermochromic pigment dispersions opens up a new issue. In this study, thermochromic pigments were applied in the leather finishing process in order to obtain leathers changing colour with temperature and their potential for innovative design concepts accompanied with an evaluation of technical features of the materials is presented. Two thermochromic pigments, providing colour change at 15°C and 31°C were applied at different proportions in the base-coat of the finishing process. The colour measurements and colour change of the thermochromic leathers were determined by a Minolta CM-3600d spectrophotometer bath prior to and subsequent to the rubbing fastness tests.
To and fro rubbing, crockmeter and light fastness properties of leathers were examined according to TS EN ISO 11640, ASTM D5053 and ISO 105-B02 standards respectively. Leathers coloured with thermochromic pigments showed a significant color changing effect depending on temperature and, as expected, the thermochromic effect was improved by a higher thermochromic pigment proportion in the finishing formulation. Fastness properties of thermochromic leathers, except light fastness, were found to be adequate compared to conventionally finished leathers. The findings suggest that the thermochromic pigments could be alternatively used with concentional conventional pigments in leather finishing applications according to leather fashion trends and different designs of leather products in addition to technical leathers and textiles in the field of medical and protective wear applications.Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHODS

They show that dyes are taken up in the first 5-10 min and this rate is not affected greatly by temperature, though differences in brilliance and fastness are better at higher temperatures.
Auxiliaries which give a levelling action with an anionic, tanning or dispersing action often result in a severe loss of colour intensity.

Highest fastness properties are demanded of glove and clothing suede leather. For these good wash and solvent fastness properties are desired. But requirements for light, water and perspiration fastness are also of considerable importance.
As chamois tannages are stable to alkali, and also washable, they recently have found use for the manufacture of fashionable dress goods.
Reactive dyestuffs with a vinyl sulphone group (which include the Remazol dyestuffs) make comparatively high fastness properties on chamois leather possible, which to a very far degree fulfil the fastness demands mentioned in the above. Amongst other dyestuffs that are used for the dyeing of chamois leather are sulphur dyestuffs and anthrasol dyestuffs, which give dyeings with good light and wash fastness. With sulphur dyestuffs, however, the dyeings to be obtained are rather dull in shade. Anthrasol dyestuffs have extremely high prices.
When dyeing with these dyestuffgroups they must be made water soluble or in the case of anthrasol dyestuffs are already available in the water soluble form, which is absorbed by the leather and then irreversibly transformed into an insoluble dyestuff, which is very wet fast. When using Azoic Naphtol AS compounds in combination with Azanil or fast colour salts the dyeing process is similar. When using reactive dyestuffs a genuine chemical linkage between dyestuff and collagen takes place, which is responsible for the fastness properties.
Chamois tanned suede leather is one of the few kinds of leather that are stable to washing and mild alkalis. It is therefore possible to dye in alkaline liquors and to use vinyl sulphone dyestuffs, which are dyed from such liquors.Note de contenu : - The vinyl sulphone dyestuffs

Résumé: It has been shown that iron complex and many copper complex dyes are readily decomposed by sequestrants. In addition, iron complex dyes are readily decomposed by cupric ions. Hue changes occur on dye decomposition and these can give rise to unlevelness and colour variation in dyeing. Certain combinations of iron and copper complex dyes are unstable in aqueous solution at 60°C and this can result in pack to pack colour variation. PhotostabilitéIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Lightfastness, particularly for furniture and garment leathers, is a major issue, and tanners are experiencing more technical problems in leather dyeing than previously encountered.
When grain leathers were finished using pigments, the lightfastness was largely dependent upon the properties of the pigment used. However, today the dyestuff is often the main component for lightfastness.
Demands can vary depending on the intended purpose of the leather. While a lightfastness of grade 3 is sufficient for shoe upper leathers, the market asks for grade 3-4 for garment leathers and, for upholstery, a lightfastness of grade 4. These values apply for both full grain and velour leathers and are influenced by the following factors:
- Dyestuff selection (type/structure).
- Shade depth (dyestuff amount/dye procedure).
- Leather type.
- Characteristics of tannage, retannage and fatliquor.
