Structure moléculaireIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A series of polyesters was prepared to evaluate hydrolytic stability as a function of cyclohexyl dibasic acid content. The three cyclohexyl dibasic acids: 1,2; 1,3; and 1,4 were formulated into polyesters with two glycols. The proportion of cis and trans isomers was evaluated via 1H NMR. The hydrolytic stability of short chain polyesters was evaluated in an acetone/water mixture which solubilized the polyesters to mimic oligoester behavior within a thermosetting polyester coating environment. The rate of hydrolysis was monitored by acid titration and corroborated by GPC. Surprisingly, 1,2-cyclohexyl diacid-based polyesters were robust, and 1,3-cyclohexyl diacid-based polyesters were the most susceptible to hydrolysis. Evidently, a 1,2-anchimeric effect for cyclohexyl dibasic acid polyesters was not an important consideration, while the 1,3-cyclohexyl ester interaction was. Consequently, an anomeric effect was proposed. Revêtement métalliqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : An economic, high efficiency sodium dihydric phosphate surface pretreatment process (SDPT) was developed to improve the adhesive bond performance of 2 mm thick hot-rolled wrought magnesium AZ31 sheets. A phosphating solution with sodium dihydric phosphate (NaH2PO4), additive sodium fluoride (NaF), and accelerator sodium molybdate (Na2MoO4), sodium tungstate (Na2WO4) and potassium nitrate (KNO3) were developed to pretreat the magnesium alloys. The content of sodium dihydric phosphate in the phosphating solution was strictly controlled to insure it supplied sufficient acid radical HPO4 2− to phosphate magnesium AZ31 alloy. Furthermore, a suitable H+ content to keep the pH values in the range of 5–6 for a phosphating solution was necessary. With this SDPT pretreatment process, a coating consisting of the magnesium phosphate, magnesia (MgO), magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2), magnesium fluoride (MgF2) and a minor amount of molybdenum oxide(MoO3) was formed on the surface of the magnesium AZ31. While the SDPT pretreated adhesive-bonded joints had better initial bond strength than phosphate–permanganate process pretreated joints, the corrosion resistance of SDPT pretreated joints was slightly inferior. RevêtementsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Although pure-acryilc based coatings already exhibit a good exterior durability, there is still a need to further enhance their performance to move our industry towards improved sustainability by creating even longer lasting coatings. A new family of pure acrylic binders has been designed to adsorb onto TiO2 pigment in order to not only boost the hiding performance by better spacing the pigment, but also to help create a more homogeneous network in the final coating. The more optimal distribution of the mineral phase in the organic matrix allows for a final coating with superior performance, in particular : an excellent chalk resistance, excellent efflorescence resistance and improved gloss and color retention. The paint formulator can now develop coatings with further improved durability, reduced TiO2 level which results in formulation cost savings and better environmental profile since TiO2 is often a main negative contributor to a paint product's carbon footprint over the cradle-to-grave lifecycle. Technique des plasmasIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A new test method for weatherability prediction using a remote plasma reactor has been studied. The degradation mechanism was studied, focusing on the fact that the exposure to radicals strongly influences the durability of coatings. As a means of radical irradiation on the coatings, a plasma-generating machine was used. More specifically, the weatherability of enamel-type coatings, surface changes (3D-SEM observations), as well as changes in colour and gloss, were studied using a down-flow-type machine (remote plasma reactor). The polarity index was also defined.
This remote plasma method correlated very well with the outdoor exposure test in addition, the acceleration behaviour with the test time was well controlled.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Preparation of model paints - Accelerated testing - Characterisations and analysis
