Tannage Résumé : Our previous studies amply demonstrated the valuable properties that glutaraldehyde imparted to leather, especially when used in combination with chrome in the tanning of hides and skins. One of the properties imparted to leather by glutaraldehyde was a markedly improved resistance to perspiration. This was true whether glutaraldehyde was used as the only tanning agent or in combination with chrome or other conventional tanning agents. We found that glutaraldehyde was used to its hest advantage following chrome tanning of leather, since many tanners sort in the blue. However, our previous publications have also shown that applying the glutaraldehyde before, or even simultaneously with, the chrome was at least equally effective.
In one of our earlier studies we investigated the effect of elevated temperatures on glutaraldehyde retannage of chrome-tanned sides. In that study the temperature was initially 63°C. and ended at 47°C. As expected, the effect of elevated temperature was to increase the rate of uptake of glutaraldehyde by the chrome-tanned side leather.
We now report the results obtained using chrome-tanned cabretta skins in a thermostatted Meissner mill. Because many post-tanning processes, such as retannage, coloring, and fat liquoring, are carried out at about 50°C., we chose this temperature for our studies on retannage of chrome leather with glutaraldehyde. The objective of this study was to determine the quantity of glutaraldehyde and the time of retannage required to attain perspiration-resistance in the chrome leather.

Tannage Résumé : Two different samples of cow softy leather (identified as CSG0 and CSG3) were prepared from a cow wet-blue of Indian origin. CSG0 was the control sample and CSG3 had 3% glutaraldehyde added to the process. Other unit operations (physical and chemical) were the same in both samples. Thermal, mechanical and hydrodynamic swelling behaviour of these samples was studied in order to correlate it with the cross-linking densities of the samples.
The hydrodynamic swelling behavior was studied in three different solvents (viz. water, toluene and xylene), assuming definite solvent-bovine collagen interaction parameters, cross-link densities were evaluated by applying the Flory-Rehner equation.
Regarding the mechanical behaviour, some distinguished theoretical models (e.g. Mooney-Rivlin, Flory, and Martin, Roth & Stiehler (MRS)) were tried for fit with the results obtained in stress-strain analyses. A few constants for Cr-tanned cow leather were derived, the value of constant A in MRS equation remained in the range of 0.9-1.0 and constant B in Flory's equation remained in the range of 0.001-0.005, not reported previously in the literature. It was found that glutaraldehyde raised cross¬linking density of chrome-tanned leather from 2.59 x 10-3 mol.m-3 to 3.27 x 10-3 mol.m-3, which is reflected in CSG3 greater thermal resistance, but the physical degree of cross links, calculated from Flory-Rehner equation, decreases which is reflected in CSG3 poor solvent resistance in comparison to CSGo.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES : Materials - Preparation of samples - Characterization

Produits commerciaux -- ContrefaçonIndex. décimale : 668.3 Adhésifs et produits semblables Résumé : Over the past decade, counterfeits have increasingly made and sold products that they claim are glutaraldehyde based, but actually contain other ingredients.
First produced commercially in 1951, glutaraldehyde provides broad efficacy, is readily biodegradable and formaldehyde free, and is also non-carcinogenic, non-persistent and non bio-accumulative, which distinguishes it from many other biocides. This versatile microbiocide offers a host of advantages in controlling microbes found in commercial and industrial settings, ant its applications are of use to global formulators, manufacturers and end users in the adhesives and sealants industries.Note de contenu : - GLUTARALDEHYDE APPLICATIONS AND FEATURES : Mode of action - Environmental profile - Occupational safety - A long, data-rich history

Tannage Résumé : Pickled skins were individually tanned with different commercial tanning agents, including chromitan [chrometan], glutaraldehyde and vegetable tannin extracts. The flammability of the tanned leathers were tested by the Oxygen Index test method (ASTM D 2863-77) and the Vertical Flame test (ALCA Method E 50). The densities of the tanned leathers were also measured to show the relationship between fibre’s tightness and leather’s flammability. The results show that the three tannages can enhance the flame resistance of leather and that the performance of tanning agents on leather can be ranked as: tannin extracts>chromitan>glutaraldehyde.
The ranking of the leather density results is the same as the flammability sequence. The results should be useful as a basis for the options in tanning fire-resistant leather.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES : Materials - Preparation of tanned leather samples - Sampling for oxygen index test and vertical flame test - Vertical flame test - Oxygen index test - Determination of the leather density
