These features are necessary to ensure that the finished part will withstand the rigors of forming and process handling with scuffing and surface abrasion. Also the final coating must adhere to a wide variety of metal types that may have surface contamination that make adhesion a challenge.
This work will investigate and report the performance results of acrylated monomers and oligomers when subjected to typical end-use tests designed to measure the flexibility and adhesion characteristics of coatings. Oligomers having adhesion promoting characteristics will be tested alone or in combination with monomeric acid functional adhesion promoters to determine thebest type of oligomer to use for a given substrate.
Also the correct level of addition of the adhesion promoters will be determined to obtain optimum performance results. In addition moisture resistance will be explored as it relates to oligomer type.
Another significant development in the can manufacturing industry has involved the elimination of Bisphenol A (BPA) from coatings that are intended for food packaging applications. The performance benefits of polyester acrylate oligomers will be highlighted compared and contrasted to those of Bis A epoxy acrylate oligomer. Each of the formulations used in this study are in fact BPA free.Note de contenu : - Application and cure conditions

ViscositéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Ensuring proper adhesion between energy-curable coatings and non-absorptive substrates has long been a significant challenge. Whether it’s high shrinkage seen with the coating itself or low surface energy of the substrate’s surface, multiple factors can negatively influence the adhesion properties of a finished formulation. Past solutions to overcome these various hurdles have included the use of pretreated substrates and the addition of solventborne adhesion promoters. However, escalating costs, increased processing times, and regulatory concerns have forced formulators to start searching for alternate solutions. This paper discusses the incorporation of specialty co-binder resins to improve adhesion onto difficult plastic substrates. Because these novel adhesion promoters are solvent-free, low viscosity, and widely compatible, formulators can tackle the industry’s problem without compromising the performance of their energy-curable coatings. Revêtements -- Séchage sous rayonnement ultravioletIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : UV LED curing technology today offers numerous benefits in terms of sustainability, cost, and performance for certain applications—most notably graphics [primers and over print varnishes (OPVs)], wood fillers, fiber optics, electronic display coatings, and some non-graphic web coatings. The advantages being realized in these markets are generating interest from other sectors where UV LED curing technology has not reached the levels needed for commercialization. Interested end users are working closely with UV lamp/equipment manufacturers and coating formulators and their raw material (resin, additive, photoinitiator) suppliers to devise systems that will overcome current limitations and facilitate broader adoption of UV LED curing for industrial wood and other coatings, automotive/transportation, and many other applications. Revêtements -- Séchage sous rayonnement ultravioletIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : An advanced study of the use of instrument-resolved radiachromic radiometry to solve some of the difficulties presented by traditional radiometry in 3-D processing, roll-to-roll printing and coating, and ink jet printing. Elements of responsivity, dynamic range, and adaptability of various types of films are discussed. Commercially available films and experimental films are studied. Methods of correlation to produce a numerical measure of UV exposure are presented. These methods can be applied easily to laboratory characterization of materials and to production quality control. The principal purpose is to explore the use of standard instruments to quantify the response of radiachromic films in terms of transmission or reflection densitometry. This allows correlation of their optical density to instrument radiometry for (1) process design optimization and/or (2) periodic measurements to verify lamp condition over time. The most important conclusion is that, when carefully designed and used, radiachromic films can be a useful extension of – but not a substitute for – instrument radiometry.
