Surface characteristics of coating layers formed by coating pigments with different particle sizes and size distribution / Sanjay Tyagi in JOURNAL OF COATINGS TECHNOLOGY AND RESEARCH, Vol. 7, N° 6 (11/2010)
[article]

Taille des particulesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The effects of coating color raw material variables were tested on absorbing and non-absorbing base materials. The particle size of the coating pigments was the main variable affecting the gloss of the non-absorbing base materials. Adding binders and increasing the drying temperature has a negative effect on the gloss development of both calendered and uncalendered coating layers. On calendered layers, coating layer films showed more gloss development than for coated papers, especially with coarse particles. Uncalendered calcium carbonate-coated papers have a higher PPS roughness than calendered clay-coated papers. The effectiveness of calendering, as described by “calenderability,” showed an increase in gloss with increasing number of nips, irrespective of size, and size distribution of pigment particles. In the first step, polyurethane prepolymer was prepared by the reaction of hexamethylene diisocyanate and polypropylene glycol in the presence of a catalytic amount of dibutyltin dilaurate. In the second step, poly(urethane-imide) prepolymer was prepared by the reaction of synthesized polyurethane prepolymer in the first step with pyromellitic dianhydride in dimethylformamide. In the third step, the prepared poly(urethane-imide) (PUI) reacted with 2,2-bis (hydroxymethyl) propionic acid, and the reaction completed in the last step which involved neutralization and dispersion in water, where acidic poly(urethane-imide) was neutralized by the addition of triethylamine. The prepared poly(urethane-imide) dispersions were characterized by fourier transform infrared spectrometry, proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1HNMR), thermogravimetric analysis, and dynamic laser scattering. A series of PUI dispersions with 30 wt% solid content, viscosities of 9 ± 1 cps, and particle sizes of 78–133 nm range were prepared and characterized.
Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The nano-encapsulated phase change materials for leather with octadecane as core and potystyrene as shell were prepared by mini-emulsion polymerization. ViscositéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : 3-Pentadecylphenyl acrylate (PDPA) was synthesized from renewable sources (the cashew nut shell liquid), by using a novel organic chemical intermediate that can be used to copolymerize with vinyl monomers. A novel acrylic polyester hyper-dispersant was prepared by polymerization of methacrylic acid (MAA), butyl acrylate (BA), and PDPA. The acrylic polyester hyper-dispersants were used to disperse titanium dioxide in non-polar solvent system, and the dispersion performance was studied. The viscosity and particle size of suspensions were affected by monomer ratio and molecular weight; the results showed that the optimum monomer ratio and molecular weight were MAA:BA:PDPA = 1:10:1.2 (wt%) and 6000, respectively. The optimum amount weight of MAA of acrylic polyester should be around 10% (wt%). Tanins végétauxIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : A novel natural coloured waterborne polyurethane (PU) based on valonia tannin was successfully synthesised and characterised. A structural study of the polymer by Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed the incorporation of valonia tannin into the backbone of the PU. The dispersion of valonia tannin and homogeneity of surface of the PU samples were confirmed by scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis. Chromaticity and colour difference further verified the colour depth and uniformity of the cured films. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) results indicated that the synthesised PU samples exhibited an improved thermal decomposition temperature. Particle size analysis, mechanical testing and water absorption of the synthesised PU samples further showed the effect of the cross-linked structure in the molecular chain segment. Moreover, the colour fastness and folding [flexing] resistance of the leather coating finished with synthesised PU was better than that of valonia tannin blending.
