Inkjet printing : effects of binder particle size and chitosan pretreatment on the qualities of silk fabric / W. Kangwansupamonkon in SURFACE COATINGS INTERNATIONAL, Vol. 94, 6 (12/2011)

Titre : Inkjet printing : effects of binder particle size and chitosan pretreatment on the qualities of silk fabric Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : W. Kangwansupamonkon, Auteur ; M. Suknithipol, Auteur ; S. Phattanarudee, Auteur ; S. Kiatkamjornwong, Auteur Année de publication : 2011 Article en page(s) : p. 216-225 Note générale : Bibliogr.

Taille des particulesIndex. décimale : 667.5 Encres d'imprimerie Résumé : Inkjet inks for fabric printing usually contain either a dye or a pigment as colourants. The most important requirement of pigmented inks is the pigment dispersion stability and performance over a wide range of conditions, temperatures and times. The binder of an inkjet ink may contain one or more polymer types to control the viscosity of the ink system, to promote droplet formation, and to serv as a binder for the colourant, providing adhesion to the printing surface by the formation of a localised film. The development of a truly effective binder that is suitable for inkjet inks sill remains a great challenge due to the the strict requirements of particle size, size distribution, surface tension, viscosity, stability, compatibility with other components of the inks, and the printing system. There also needs to be controlled drop formation, jetting and fabric wettability. In this light, nanoscale binders appear as likely candidates for pigment-based inkjet ink printing on fabrics. Indeed, inks containing nano-sized binders and commercial pigment dispersions have previously been demonstrated to give excellent printability, good colour fastness and softness of the printed fabrics. Taille des particulesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Particle size is often a critical parameter in the performance of fillers. The author shows how investment in equipment has improved productivity.
To ensure the highest quality of powders such as functional fillers and extenders an accurate and reliable measurement of particle size distribution is important. Viation Industries, the UK's largest manufacturer and processor of barium sulphate functional fillers and extenders, uses a Malvern Instruments Mastersizer 2000 to analyse the particle size distribution of all its products. This has enabled the company to manufacture and measure super fine powders that previously were not commercially available. Viaton's Airwhite range is manufactured either from high whiteness, low silica, high purity natural barium sulphate or from chemically precipitated materials. Airwhite 4C, for example, is an ultrafine high-purity coated white baryted extender that is used in printing inks and surface coatings. Its maximum particle size (DV97; the boundary diameter below which 97% by volume is found) is typically 4.5 µm, but a critical parameter is also the DV50 (the boundary diameter below which 50% by volume is found), because this determines the level of gloss.Note de contenu : - Laser diffraction

Taille des particulesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The author details just a few of the methods and instruments available that are able to measure the size of fine particles down to 0.003 micrometers in diameter.
The methods of measuring fine particle sizes have seen major developments in the past few decades. This applies to fine solids, but especially to latex particules. The oldest method for separating solid particles by size was the use of a sieve. Later, a range of sieves with different meshes was used.
Woven sieves are available for measuring sizes of particles from several millimeters to 20 micrometers, although some care is needed in the latter case to ensure that the sieve does not become distortes. Shape has a strong influence on particule size by sieving.
Originally, the only method of measuring the size of latex particles was by direct microscopic observation, which could give a maximum magnification of about 400. The phase microscope with oil immersion increases magnification to a maximum of about 600. The latex is diluted at least 10 times before a drop is placed on a slide and a cover glass is pressed over it. The assumption here is that particles in latex are essentially spherical, but this is noy always true.
Simple observations can show whether particles in any latex are unisized or have a variety of sizes and shapes. In dealing with solids, size and shape have more significances. The minimum size which can be observed directly is about 0.4 micrometers.Note de contenu : - Modern methods

Taille des particulesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Blends of hard (Tg ∼ 60 °C) and soft (Tg ∼ 0°C) latexes were studied as a function of particle size ratio (Rsoft/Rhard) and blend ratio (mass soft phase/ mass hard phase). Addition of hard phase latex to the soft film forming latex significantly improved block resistance, even at blend ratios as low as 70/30. Film properties were not sacrificed, except at high concentrations of the hard phase (50/50). For a given blend ratio, the particle size ratio had a dramatic effect on the block resistance. For a 70/30 blend ratio, the block resistance of a blend with Rsoft/Rhard = 4.0 was equivalent to that of a control latex having the same overall composition, but with a minimum film temperature 20°C higher than the blend. The phenomenon can be explained in terms of the bulk and surface contributions to adhesion. The hard phase increases the elastic modulus (G') of the film. The magnitude of G' was found to increase with increasing Rsoft/Rhard, an effect that is consistent with percolation theory. The effect of particle size ratio on the surface contribution to adhesion can be explained by particle packing. Visual models indicate that a high apparent surface concentration of hard particles would be expected for a large value of Rsoft/Rhard, given ideal packing conditions. This effect was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy.
