A general correlation was developed between traditional tape properties and rheological measurements for silicone pressure-sensitive adhesives and the results show an inverse correlation to those reported by Chu (4) for resin reinforced natural rubber PSAs. Temperature sweep data was shown to be useful for predicting the bulk processing characteristics of some silicone adhesive formulations at elevated temperatures. Rheology can also be used to verify similarities or differences in cross-link densities when resin-to-polymer ratios are held constant. At a given resin-to-polymer ratio, viscoelastic properties (i.e. Eta, G' and G'') can significantly change as the cross-link density is increased or decreased. Work is currently underway to quantitate these changes through the use of visco-elastic measurements. Like any other business, PP has to ensure efficiency in meeting production deadlines, saving money and avoiding excessive waste. So when a local distributor, Ellsworth Adhesive Systems, Audubon, Pa., learned that PP's manufacturing operations were not as efficient as they could be, it contacted PP manufacturing engineer Scott Downing with an idea. John Petrauskas, an Ellsworth sales representative, told Downing that PP could increase efficiency and reduce costs by changing the adhesive products used in the production process. PP, a maker of high-quality heavy-gauge thermoforming, manufactures plastic products for thousands of items per year. The company provides precision parts for the most exacting and difficult applications by following stringent manufacturing and quality control guidelines. PP's products include, among others, seating parts for mass transit, flexible casings for computers and electronics, trays and boxes for materials handlings companies and control panels for industrial firms. Petrauskas recommended and adhesive manufactured by Devcon, a leader in the production of maintenance, repair and adhesive technology. According to Petrauskas, by using Devcon's adhesive technology, PP could continue producing high-quality finished products with just one adhesive, instead of the three it had been using previously. But Downing said he was septical. Finding the right adhesive among dozens of products on the market would be time consuming. Because so much was at risk by changing to another brand, he had to make a serious commitment to finding the right product.
