Colour matching and colour formulation by sophisticated computer gas, in fact, revolutionised the paint manufacturing and application industries acrros the world. In the present article, various theoretical and practical aspects behind appearance of colour in chemical compounds have been presented. Quantification of colour has been discussed in three dimensions, viz. Hue, value and chroma in different colour systems, such as Munsell, CIE and ostwald. Colour comparison made by spectrophotometric methods has also been analysed. Colour difference measurement, shade matching and colour formulation by using sophisticated computer softwre have been elaborated in this article. Note de contenu : - Light primaries

Titre : One coat technology : is this a reality ? Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Brian Devlin, Auteur Année de publication : 2000 Article en page(s) : p. 91-98 Note générale : Bibligr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The subject under review was proposed following extensive field trials of Chemco International's advanced new generation epoxy glassflake systems, where this property / distinct feature of the coating system was identified as one which could be commercially exploited. Investigation by desk research, aimed at establishing terms ofreference from which to base and direct subsequent research involved : identifying prevailing industry trends, Research & Development to date by others in this field, a review of prevailing market conditions and most importantly the potential problems and benefits. A case was made for considering epoxy glassflake for use in one-coat applications by presenting results of extensive field trials for critical appraisal. This section includes characterisation of epoxy formulations. Results of investigation were then compared against existing and other new technologies to define the limitations of the product from a commercial standpoint and to assess, from an industry view, whether or not the time was right for such systems. Based on results, the distinct features, characteristics, properties and benefits of this new technology are presented for consideration. The author recommends Statistical Process Control principles be implemented in laboratory and field test conditions as a way of validating test data. More importantly, the author stresses the need for action to be taken by approval authorities to ensure such techniques are implemented by contractors. Note de contenu : - Background

Titre : The future of pipeline coatings Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : D. Fairhurst, Auteur Année de publication : 2000 Article en page(s) : p. 101-108 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This article begins by summarizing the historical development of anticorrosion coatings for buried and subsea pipelines, from coal tar and asphalt enamels to fusion-bonded epoxies and polyolefins and, most recently, field joint coatings. It discusses the major factors likely to influence the continuing development of pipeline coatings by manufacturers and the selection of these coatings by end-users, particularly in the oil and gas industries. These factors include pipeline construction costs, health and safety considerations, and higher pipeline operating temperatures. In the future, external protective coatings are likely to be considered more in terms of their impact upon whole life pipeline costs than as individual cost items. Health and safety restrictions can be expected to result in the continuing decline in the use of coal tar and asphalt enamels and increasing specification of fusion-bonded epoxy (FBE) and three-layer FBE-polyolefin coatings. Furthermore, field joint coating work is likely to rely more on closed-circuit blast-cleaning systems, and enclosed automatic coating application equipment. If the upward trend in pipeline operating temperatures is to continue, then a major advance in the technology of pipeline coating materials will be required rather than further development of current technology. This coating offers high solid-high scratch-high impact-high wear-chemical resistance properties. All these combined properties helps in enhancing the overall properties of the painted component by a factor of 5-7 times when compared to conventional coating systems. The dry film coatings exhibit enhanced substrate adhesion, intercoat adhesion, thermic shock, hot water, anti-rust properties. These ceramic paints are basically recommended for aircraft and defence purposes where high scratch and abrasion resistance are required. This can be conveniently used where high built coatings are required, like aircraft leading edge areas, machine tools industries, automobile components, plant equipments, machinery components, home appliances, etc. Ceramic paints are available in various shades and at affordable prices. They can be used by conventional spray methods as well as by brush painting. Growth is not likely to be spectacular either. But there are expected to be some minor changes that will affect the industry, mainly in terms of environmental conditions, better working conditions and keeping the costs through investments in new technologies and improvements of productivity. Environmental regulations are going at a pace faster than the market can accommodate. They are not applied equally in every part of the world, as is the case with the working conditions. It is one of the first market demands nowadays to create common conditions to compete fairly with the same rules in every part of the world.
