Titre : Development of efficient and durable sources of white light Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Timothy L. Dawson, Auteur Année de publication : 2010 Article en page(s) : p. 1-10 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Diodes électroluminescentes Index. décimale : 628.95 Eclairage Résumé : This review presents a brief history of the development of light sources over the centuries to provide one of the human race's basic needs – light. Recent moves in Europe to encourage the adoption of compact fluorescent lamps as more energy-efficient replacements for incandescent lights, despite certain drawbacks, are described. Rapid strides are now being made in the development of solid-state 'white' lights which are already sufficiently durable and efficient to warrant adoption for both domestic and public lighting purposes. Their basic construction and comparative performance, properties and uses are fully described, together with the many ideas for improving their brightness and durability still further. Solid-state devices offer additional savings compared with those which should be achieved under the EU's targeted replacement of incandescent lights by 2012, and later one can expect such devices to compete with high-pressure sodium luminaires for street lighting. Titre : Di(methylsulphonyl)quinacridone : synthesis, characterisation and application in nylon Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Pamela M. Visintin, Auteur ; Robert W. Mims, Auteur Année de publication : 2010 Article en page(s) : p. 11-17 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : The first quinacridone derivative with methylsulphonyl substituents, 2,9-di(methylsulphonyl)quinacridone, has been synthesised using two new sulphur-containing intermediates, 2,5-di(4-methylthioanilino)-terephthalic acid and 2,5-di-(4-methylsulphonylanilino)terephthalic acid. The key step in synthesising 2,9-di(methylsulphonyl)quinacridone involves the controlled and complete oxidation of the sulphide groups to their respective sulphonyl groups. The oxidation process is unique in that the presence of a catalyst is not required. The two different polymorphs of 2,9-di(methylsulphonyl)quinacridone range in colour from red to orange and exhibit extremely low solubility in organic solvents, water and acidic or basic media. When incorporated into nylon 6 by the extrusion/injection moulding method, both crystal forms of this pigment display excellent thermal and chemical stability up to a moulding temperature of 302°C. The nylon–quinacridone compositions exhibit a high degree of light fastness, with a CIELAB Delta E*ab (colour difference) value > 1.0 after a 200-h exposure time at 6500 W. Choi, Auteur Année de publication : 2010 Article en page(s) : p. 18-23 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : Torque-free ring spinning is a new spinning technology that has produced yarns with low twist and balanced torque. In this study, a commercially torque-free ring-spun yarn, namely Estex yarn, with three types of cotton fibre, i.e. Pima, upland and organic cotton, were used. Cotton fabric samples were knitted with Estex yarns and conventional ring-spun yarns. The fabric samples were then dyed with two reactive dyes, Remazol Black B and Remazol Brilliant Blue R Spec., and the fabric dyeability was measured in terms of reflectance and colour yield. Finally, the results were analysed using the statistical software package SPSS and the results revealed that fabric samples manufactured by Estex yarns could achieve a better colour yield than conventional ring-spun fabric samples. In addition, the Pima cotton gave the best colour yield, followed by upland cotton and organic cotton. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : This research aims to convert CIE L*C*abhab coordinates into corresponding Munsell hues. Different transformation methods for colour mapping from CIELAB colour space to Munsell hues are proposed. Polynomial equations that predict Munsell hue from CIELAB hab suffer from poor performance as there is no direct one-to-one mapping. Polynomial methods that predict Munsell hue from all three L*C*abhab values also show limited performance. However, a distance-weighted look-up-table model based upon the CIEDE2000 colour-difference equation is able to predict Munsell hue to an accuracy of 1 unit of root mean square error. All transformation methods in this paper were developed using CIE illuminant C and the 2° standard observer conditions and were based on 2729 Munsell renotation colour samples. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : In this paper, the solubilisation kinetics of three novel monoazo disperse dyes based on naphthalimdes incorporating a butyric acid group were investigated in different conditions using spectrophotometry. All dyes showed a reasonable level of solubilisation in alkaline media. Kinetic studies of the solubilisation reaction of the dyes in alkaline media showed that the rate of solubilisation of all dyes is a pseudo first-order reaction equation. The rate constants of the solubilisation reaction of the dyes in alkaline media indicated that dye 3, which is prepared by the diazotisation of 4-amino-n-butyric acid 1,8-naphthalimide and coupled with N,N-diethy-n-hydroxyethyllaniline, has the highest rate of reaction and dye 1, which is prepared by the diazotisation of 4-amino-n-butyric acid 1,8-naphthalimide and coupled with N,N-diethylaniline, has the lowest rate. The dyes were applied on polyester fabrics and their fastness properties were examined. The dyed fabrics showed a good to excellent degree of wash and rubbing fastnesses after replacing reduction clearing with alkali clearing. Titre : Influence of Eri silk fibre on the physical characteristics and dyeing properties of Eri silk/cotton blended yarn Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Rungsima Chollakup, Auteur ; Suchada Ujjin, Auteur ; Jantip Suesat, Auteur Année de publication : 2010 Article en page(s) : p. 42-47 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : Different blending ratios of Eri silk and cotton fibres were prepared. The optimum bleaching condition chosen for the blends containing 0–25% silk content was the oxidative bleaching method, whereas the blends at 50–100% should be bleached using the two-stage bleaching method (oxidative bleaching followed by reductive bleaching). These conditions did affect the force–displacement characteristics of the fibres with no yield point. X-Ray diffraction results showed that the percentage of crystallinity of the cotton yarn tended to increase after bleaching, whereas the percentage of crystallinity of the Eri yarn decreased marginally. Dyeing properties of the blended yarns were investigated using warm-dyeing reactive dyes. Percentage exhaustion and the colour yield of the blends tended to decrease with the increasing silk content. Shade variation was observed on the yarns at different blend ratios. This was expected to be caused by the different physical nature of Eri silk and cotton fibres. Consequently, the dye uptake and visual shade of each dye on the two fibres were different. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : The colour component from the bark of Macaranga peltata has been extracted and, using spectral techniques, the main colouring ingredient has been identified as ellagic acid. The dyeing properties of the extract on silk have been studied. The colour coordinates of the dyed samples were found to be in the yellow–red quadrant of the colour space diagram and the dyed samples exhibited acceptable fastness properties. The effect of temperature and dye concentration on the rate of dyeing has been studied. Adsorption studies revealed that the process fits well with the Langmuir isotherm model. The thermodynamic parameters of the dyeing process have been evaluated using an Arrhenius plot. The experimental results revealed that the adsorption was exothermic and spontaneous in nature, and exhibited first-order kinetics. Further, the effect of electrolyte on rate of dyeing has also been recorded. The rate of adsorption increases as the disrupting effect of the added electrolyte cation increases and follows the order: Al3+ > Ca2+ > Na+.
