The flexibility of the mapping method makes it possible to study and compare thousands of different mixer layouts and perform optimization with respect to macroscopic homogenization efficiency and interface generation. In the paper two different designs of the mixer are investigated. The conventional mixer with sequentially different twisted blades and adesign where the twist direction is maintained constant. In both cases the blade twist angle is varied. Recommendations are given in the choice of the design of the mixer dependent on the desired structure of mixing. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : Advection of material volumes in a three-dimensional cavity flow is analyzed by using an experimental setup and a collection of computational tools. The experimental setup for the lid-driven cavity flow makes it possible to study the advection of drops for a wide range of flow parameters. The location of unmixed regions for a specific mixing protocol is predicted by means of the mapping method, which are then used to determine the initial location of the dyed drops in the experiments. Finally, an adaptive front tracking method is used to computationally follow the drops during flow in a precise way. In most cases, a qualitative comparison between the experiments and the simulations is found. In addition, the mapping method proves to be well suited to quickly predict unmixed regions in mixers. They are mainly configured based on extensive experience and iterative approaches to optimise output and composite quality. The visualisation technology developed in the EU-project PEPTFlow allows visualisation of composite flow in twin-screw extruders under realistic processing conditions by tracking radioactive tracer particles in the polymer melt, using a specially developed camera system. This new approach allows polymer flow to be studied in different screw elements and screw configurations under realistic compounding conditions at normal temperatures and melt pressures. The paper presents the latest developments in the camera systems as well as the different ways to use and interpret the results. Detailed analysis of residence times and residence time distributions for standard compound screw elements, like kneading discs, conveying elements and reverse elements are presented. In addition for a better understanding of the flow field inside twin-screw extruders, numerical particle tracking is done. The Stokes equation, using XFEM method, are solved and the numerical RTD’s (residence time distribution) are compared for various screw designs. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 668.9 Polymères Résumé : A partially miscible polymer PMMA/SAN blend is used in two component injection molding to produce a sandwich structure with a heterogeneous skin layer. Two different strategies are explored to obtain the desired structure either via sequential injection molding or via the use of the fountain flow. Both cases are studied with scanning electron microscopy to visualize the structure in the skin layer. In addition, numerical modelling examples are presented to improve understanding of the morphologies that have been created with injection molding.
