VerreIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Although there are many forms of silica available as pigment/filler materials for paints and coatings, one of the least expensive sources may be from post-consumer recycled glass. AS demonstration of this concept, the dry grinding of a green bottle glass to finer than 270 mesh gave a reasonable pigment/filler material for use in a variety of coating formulations. Although the color yield was minimal, the flatting was appreciable in high concentration in latex, and minimal in a urethane formulation at normal levels. Opacity did not develop in acrylic formulations until the CPVC was surpassed. The scrub resistance offered was quite impressive. The best application for the material appears to be as a filler in trade sales or related applications. The prospects for ground recycled post consumer waste glass has several favorable aspects when considered from an environmental standpoint, as well. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This work is based on an outgrowth of polymerization research aimed at producing a thioglycolate telechelic polymer, that is, a polymer with a thioglycolate ether at each end. However, it demonstrates the simplicity and ease generally required of a potentially commercially viable process for production of a corrosion inhibitor. Free radical synthesis of styrene/thioglycolate adducts shows them to be outstanding corrosion inhibitors either as the sodium salt or the non-ionic ethylene glycol half ester. As this might be a cheap, fast and easily performed synthesis, this route could lead to a commercially viable familiy of new corrosion inhibitor structures. Note de contenu : - Syntheses

Titre : The coating chemist as expert witness Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Robert D. Typically, the case will deal with the failure of a coating in a specified test or application, or the alleged theft of a coating formulation. In either type, the lawyers, judge, and perhaps a jury will need at least two things from the expert witness: instruction and judgement. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Three lawsuits involving fires and the paint industry are described. The threat is real, and must be dealt with in several ways. First of all, there is the lab testing to characterize the threat. Secondly, there are the labelling issues that warn the user. Since common sense does not seem as common as it might, the threat must be dealt with. Note de contenu : - The case of the gasoline storage tank explosion

Titre : UV protection improvement for natural oil coatings Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Robert D. Athey, Auteur ; Newall W. Heywood, Auteur ; Harold Harlan, Auteur Année de publication : 1998 Article en page(s) : p. 46-50 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : UV attack and degradation on natural oil based coatings for wooden boat components mean frequent recoating. UV stabilizers may help, but not as much as a recent invention which reduces the frequency of recoating needed, by guarding the natural oil against attack of UV with an additive formulation. The concept is to encapsulate the UV absorbers in micro-beads of poly (methyl methacrylate). Details of the experimental program demonstrating the effectiveness of this approach suggest a mechanistic explanation for why the technique works. Note de contenu : - Introduction
