This work is concerned with the replacement of toxic pigments based on chromate and lead by non-toxic anticorrosive pigments, especially the laboratory prepared magnesium ferrite pigments in water-borne binders as epoxy, alkyd and polyurethanes. Outdoor exposure, salt spray and condensed water test as well as electrochemical measurements were performed to evaluate the paints anticorrosive performance. Results were compared with a reference paints containing zinc ferrite and zinc phosphate pigments. Magnesium ferrite pigments passivate the carbon steel directly when in a neutral binder as the epoxy resin or directly due to the produced soaps with the acidic binders as the alkyd or polyurethane one. |
