The soluble keratin was regenerated into powder and then mixed with the soluble acrylic to form an acrylic/keratin composite that was finally cast into film. The topography of the acrylic/keratin film was studied using scanning electron microscopy. The chemical composition of the obtained film was assigned using elemental analysis and infrared spectroscopy. The substantivity of the prepared acrylic/keratin film towards anionic (acid and reactive) and cationic (basic) dyes was studied. The obtained film exhibited high dyeability towards both acid and reactive dyes even at relatively low dyeing temperatures. Hydrazine hydrate was used to enhance the dyeability of the said film with acid and reactive dyes. Kinetic studies of the dyeing of the film with anionic dyes were also conducted. The binder was modified with granite powder in amounts ranging from 10% to 60% in relation to the weight of the resin. Moreover, a coating was made without the addition of the granite powder in order to compare the obtained results. Previously obtained pull-off test results were also analyzed. The obtained results confirmed that the optimal material solution includes 10% or 20% of granite powder by weight. Additionally, chemical and microstructural analysis was also performed for both the reference sample and the sample modified with 20% of granite powder. The article also presents an explanation of the reasons for such an improvement of pull-off strength, which is based on careful analysis of the adhesive properties of the epoxy resin bonding agent modified with waste granite powder. Moreover, it explains how granite powder particles penetrate into the near-surface layer of the substrate, examines the porosity of the near-surface layer of the substrate using microstructural analysis, and presents the effect of adding waste granite powder to the epoxy resin bonding agent on the chemical properties of the near-surface layer of the substrate. Tannage -- DéchetsIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The manufacture of leather covers a wide productive chain and beyond contributes to the economic flow. The various stages of leather processing result in high volumes of solid waste. In Brazil, a daily generation of 375 tons of solid waste is estimated, and landfills are still the most used route to its destination. In this review, emphasis will be given to researches that have sought alternatives for the use of solid waste from the tannery industry. Among the main applications of solid tannery wastes, the following stand out production of adsorbent materials, biodiesel, biogas, biopolymers, applications in agriculture and other applications involving extraction/recovery of compounds of industrial/commercial interest, isolation of microorganisms and production of enzymes and applications in the animal diet. In each alternative of waste application, the technologies used, the opportunities, and the challenges faced are mentioned. We hope that this review can provide valuable information to promote the broad understanding of the possibilities that tannery solid wastes has for the development of biodegradable and agricultural products, wastewater treatment, extraction of compounds of industrial and commercial interest, among others. Digestion anaérobieIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Anaerobic digestion of animal glue industry solid wastes (AGISW) (residues from neutralised fleshings after glue extraction) was studied in a semi-continuous bench scale digester in order to determine the extent of the conversion into biogas. The Carbon/Nitrogen (C/N) ratio of AGISW is nearly 6.0. Solid wastes and wastewater from a local glue manufacturer were used as substrate for the anaerobic digestion. The study used a bench scale digester with a working volume of 6.5 litres operating at ambient temperature (28 ± 2°C). A hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 40 days and an Organic Loading Rate (OLR) of 3 ± 0.2 g /l. d were maintained during the study period. The study showed that 65 % of the volatile solids was destroyed. The average specific gas productions were 0.28 l /g of volatile solid added and 0.48 l/g of volatile solid removed. (Volatile solids are determined by ignition at 550°C and are a measure of the organic matter present in the waste - mainly denatured lipids and proteins).
The values of specific gas production and percentage Volatile Solids (VS) destruction are in agreement with those for industrial and agro industrial wastes reported in the literature. The results revealed an interesting fact that, anaerobic digestion of AGISW could be operated at high Volatile Fatty Acids (VFA) concentration without affecting gas production.
Anaerobic digestion of AGISW was studied for the first time with a view to managing solid wastes in an ecofriendly manner. The authors are of the view that this maiden attempt would help the industry manufacturing animal glue to use biogas from its waste resource as fuel.Note de contenu : - Feed preparation

Déchets industriels -- RecyclageIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The final solid wastes generated by tanneries are usually separately disposed of in hazardous industrial landfills, which are characterized as places of waste confinement where the residues undergo undesired and uncontrolled biological treatment. The storage and corresponding evolution of the sludge has not yet focalized the attention of the scientific community. Apart from developing knowledge of the ecology and function of the microbial community in anaerobic digestion processes, it is necessary to control this biological process. The manipulation of strict anaerobic microorganisms is the limiting factor in their isolation due to their high sensitivity to oxygen; therefore, cultivation under anaerobic conditions is essential. This work presents an evaluation of biogas generation and quality. In addition, microbial biodegradation is carried out in bench bioreactors containing two main solid wastes from tanneries: wet-blue shavings and sludge from a tannery wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). We analyzed two storage conditions of the sludge: storage under ambient conditions and under refrigeration. Sludge kept at ambient conditions showed a significantly higher methane production; methane was only detected in vials containing high concentrations of microorganisms. The manipulation of microorganisms did not interrupt biodegradation. The isolation technique with vials proved to be appropriate for the quantification of methanogenic microorganisms in biodegradation tests, although it was not fully elucidated for their isolation.
