RevêtementsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : We report on the results of a comprehensive two-dimensional computational study of diffusion across disordered flake composites. Our objective is (1) the evaluation of existing literature models for the effect of flake orientation and (2) the evaluation of the influence of boundary conditions and unit-cell types on the predicted barrier properties. Flake orientation is an important parameter affecting barrier properties in flake-filled composites, as the barrier efficacy of such systems depends significantly on the extent to which the flakes have been oriented as close as possible to being perpendicular to the direction of macroscopic diffusion. Our comparisons rely on an extensive set of computational results in two-dimensional, doubly periodic unit cells, each containing up to 3000 individual unidirectional flake cross-sections which are randomly placed and with their axes forming an angle (π/2 − θ) with the direction of macroscopic diffusion. A unique feature of our study is the consideration of high aspect ratio (α) systems with α = 100 and α = 1000, from the dilute (αφ = 0.01) and into the very concentrated (αφ = 40) regime. The effective diffusivity of the corresponding unit cells is computed from the imposed concentration difference and the computed mass flux, using Fick’s Law. We show that use of cyclic boundary conditions and doubly periodic unit cells results in effective diffusivities which are in agreement with theory and invariant of the shape of the unit cell. In addition, we show that the use of adiabatic boundary conditions produces erroneous results at high flake concentrations. Comparison of our results with existing theoretical models revealed several shortcomings of the latter concerning both the effect of flake concentration (αφ) and the effect of the orientation angle (θ). The principal reason for the latter shortcoming is the fact that said models do not respect the rotational invariance of the diffusivity tensor. Note de contenu : - COMPUTATIONAL

Revêtements antisalissures:Peinture antisalissuresIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : • Six lectures presented in 2012 at a half-day seminar dealing with corrosion-related topics, organised by OCCA's West Riding Section, are summarised.
• Metallic flake pigments have been shown to provide better performance at lower addition rates than ordinary particles. This concept is now being developed from anticorrosive coatings to antifoulings, using copper flake pigments.
Some basic principles of corrosion were outlined in the second lecture. Corrosion is essentially an electrochemical process, requiring the presence of moisture and oxygen. Some coating failure issues were also briefly outlined.
The keynote speech by Dr Siva Biihm of Tata Steel described a number of innovative anticorrosive coatings developed by the company.
A number of zinc-free anticorrosive pigments were described. The speaker noted that high performance could be obtained by careful pigment selection, and that synergies can be obtained by using a mixture of such pigments.
• Liquid corrosion inhibitors based on DNNS salts were described. Their advantages include high transparency for use in ciear coatings and synergy with solid inhibitors in other coatings.
• Finally, the development and application of new coating systems on the famous Forth Bridge in Scotland was described. For more than a century, maintenance painting has been a continuous activity, but the new coating system has a much longer design lifetime of 25 years minimum.Note de contenu : - UNDERSTANDING THE USE OF METALLIC FLAKE PIGMENTS FOR ANTI-CORROSION : Protection for aluminium - Improving antifoulings

Pigments à effets spéciauxIndex. décimale : 667.2 Colorants et pigments Résumé : We will now run through some of the salient features of Effect Pigments before we proceed to the next topic. Effect pigments will always ensure that you achieve the sparkle, shimmer or sizzle customers are looking for, regardless of whether they are aiming to increase recognition value of brand items, emphasize specific product shapes and features, underline your products' allure via eye-catching colors and effects or simply transforming an attractive product into a necessity. An alumina effect pigment is a pearlescent pigment based on alumina (aluminium oxide). In the first step of the production process, Al2O3 (Aluminium oxide) flakes with a very smooth surface are formed. The flakes are produced using a crystal growth process. They are formed in the corundum structure (?-Al2O3). The desired flake shape is achieved by controlled crystal growth in the axial and equatorial directions. The color purity and transparency of the effect pigments obtained by coating the Al2O3, flakes with metal oxides can be attributed to the synthesis procedure yielding single-crystalline thin flakes. ZincIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Corrosion protection on steel substrates can be achieved in different ways. While traditionally the focus has been only on price, ecological awareness has been taking on an increasingly important role in corrosion protective markets. The ecological contribution of zinc flakes lies in the reduction of the metallic zinc content in the coating and thus the reduction of the cradle-to-gate product-carbon-footprint while providing a high-quality and long-lasting, galvanically active, corrosion protection coating.
