Due to their similarity in aqueous chemistry, Fe(III) salts are often considered potential alternatives for Cr(III) tanning salts. But Fe(III) tanning methods have certain limitations, which have come in the way of their use in the leather industry. One of the main problems is that iron tanned leathers are less amenable to the production of soft leathers such as garment and gloving leather. In the present study, an attempt has been made to overcome the problems associated with iron tanning for the production of goat suede and sheep nappa garment leathers. A judicious combination with chromium has been attempted and a tanning system that affords good quality leathers at the same time helps in restricting the amount of chromium and iron in the spent liquor to less than 100 mg/L has been standardized. The scanning electron microscopic analysis was carried out on the tanned leathers to study the effect of the new system on the structural characteristics of leathers produced. The strength properties and the color characteristics of the tanned leathers were also analyzed and reported. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : This work summarizes the influence exerted on cross-linking of protein hydrolyzate obtained through enzymatic hydrolysis of chrome-tanned leather shavings, by means of diepoxides (1,2:3,4 diepoxybutane and 1,2:7,8 diepoxyoctane). Attention was given to preparation of cross-linked samples, their solubility, intrinsic viscosity and IR spectra. Suitable conditions for cross-linking were found at pH = 9 and 25˚ C temperature. Solubility of samples decreased proportionately with increasing concentrations of cross-linking agent. Viscosity measurements yielded best results in 1M KCl solution. Determining intrinsic viscosity indices proved this value was influenced more by the approach of the gelation point than by the epoxide content. IR spectra demonstrated that in the region of wave numbers 838, 912 and 1,250 cm-1, peaks of epoxide groups of employed pure cross-linking agents coincide with similar peaks of other groups of cross-linked samples; peaks of epoxide bonds at the mentioned wave numbers are discernible only with highest employed concentrations of cross-linking agents. Future research will address examining various epoxy groups, employing di- or multifunctional amines and determining critical gelation conversions and critical stoichiometric ratios of defined substances. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : During conversion of hides into leather, some hide constituents undergo changes and removal. Among those are decorin, biglycan, sulfated glycosaminoglycan (SGAG) and collagen. Properly monitoring the removal of the predominant and best understood proteoglycan of skin, decorin, was the focus of this work. An ELISA method was improved by dialyzing the guanidineHCl-extracted proteins in the presence of collagenase, allowing us to obtain a more manageable sample with uniform background and in turn more reliable analytical data. ELISA results on the depletion of decorin in intact hide samples were evaluated and compared among the different parts of bovine hide before and after dialysis. There was a clear difference between undialyzed and dialyzed samples of raw intact hide, whereas after the tanning treatments, the available decorin content was significantly the same from different parts. The amount of decorin that was removed from each area of the hide (shoulder > butt > belly), after processing them using the standard USDA tanning procedure, was directly proportional to the initial amounts. The final available decorin remaining per gram of intact hide in leather (bated samples) was significantly the same in all parts. Based on the dialyzed samples, there was about a 70-78% reduction of available decorin content from raw hide to bated hide samples compared to ~90% in undialyzed samples. The results followed more closely the trend of the SGAG (carbohydrate part of decorin) content determination previously reported by this group, where about a 75% drop was observed from the initial available SGAG content in raw hide to bated hide samples. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The European Union (EU) regulation REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and restriction of CHemicals) is due to enter into force on June 2007 and shall apply from 1 June 2008. It is important that all manufacturers, importers and downstream users of chemicals and articles are prepared and fully aware of the impact this new legislation will have on their business. This poses a new challenge not only for the chemical industry in the EU but also very importantly for the EU trading partners. Trading partners will be required to gather more information on the properties of their substances and articles. The chemical industry and, to some extent, the article producer must also prepare itself for a considerable additional workload to fulfill these new requirements. To enable a smooth transition from the existing EU chemicals legislation to REACH, the EU and trading partners must be adequately prepared for the practical application of the new system by the time REACH comes into force. This paper provides background information and practical advice to the relevant business.
