The accumulated experience from world-wide large scale usage of the LIRITAN process for sole leather, and other types of vegetable leather, is reviewed. Improvements have resulted from LIRI pilot plant investigations and this world-wide large scale usage. These are discussed in the sequence of unhairing, depickling, type of polyphosphate (calgon, etc. ) and method of pretanning, the “flip-flop” system for maximum tan utilization, methods for sole, harness and belting leathers, extract dissolving, tan fixation and process control.
