Résumé : |
A simple method is desribed for measuring numericallythe softness of leathers based on compressibility. This method could be of value in the assessment of the quality of leather objectively and semiquantitatively. Current practices in the assessment and grading of leathers, at least in the case of softness of gloving and garments leahters, are based on subjective methods. Unlike the case of sole leathers, the development of instrumental methods for measuring flexibility, rigidity, bending, compresssion, etc. for the evaluation of soft leahters, for example grain garment, has so far been difficult. Further, many of the testing procedures for leather evaluation are based on destructive techniques. This paper presents a non-destructive method attempts to define the degree of softness of leather using an easily measured parameter such as compressibility. The method which seems suited especially for light leathers consists of compressing the leather surfaces laterally in between two flat objects with an increasing load. The changes in thickness in a given time were analysed as a function of the load intervals. Compression indices thus obtained seem to correlate with the tactile assessment of softness of grain garment leathers, with higher negative slope angles being associated with softer leathers. |
