The effect of incremental increases in concentration of sulfates on anaerobic digestion was investigated using a laboratory-scale Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reeactor fed semi-continuously with a synthetic wastewater. A concentration of up to 6000mg/l SO42- was found to have no effect on an acclimatized anaerobic digester with the exception of a decrease in the methane yield. The sulfides formed as a result of microbial sulfate reduction were distributed between soluble sulfides and hydrogen sulfide in the biogas. Precipitation of heavy-metal sulfides also occured in the digester. These results suggest that the concentration of sulfates and sulfides present in tannery wastewaters would be insufficient to cause failure of anaerobic digesters. |
