Résumé : |
Environmental legislation threatens chrome tanning as we know it today. This has led to the creation of the wet-white approach for leather production, using aldehydes, aluminium, titanium and zirconium salts.
Increasingly the view is being expressed that alternatives to chrome do not offer the requisite stability or versability. This paper suggests that chrome will remain the preferred tanning material, and thay every attempt must be made to make chrome tannages environmentally acceptable.
Our research has shown that simple modifications to the standard chrome tanning techniques permit the production of low-chrome, low-effluent wet-blue leathers, possessing sufficient thermal and textural stability to permit easy handling at the mechancial operations. The leathers so produced can be utilised for the manufacture of the full range of vegetable-tanned, syntan- or mineral-retanned leathers.
The tan effluent and the shavings from the low-chrome tanned leathers conform to current environmental standards.
Systems will be presented that improve the chrome fixation in the leather to conform to the EPT and TCLP standards for chrome leachables.
Processes for the retannage of most types of leather are outlined, including high-exhaust chrome retanning systems. |
