Résumé : |
A survey was carried out in a tannery processing wet-blue hides and skins into suedes for upper and garment leathers. It was found that about 30-35 litres of waste water was produced per kg of hide processed. The waste water from the fatliquoring and dyeing operations is the strongest. The BOD, suspended solids and total chromium content of the composite waste water varied from 900 to 1300 mg/l, 1640 to 2250 mg/l and 180 to 220 mg/l respectively.
Experiments showed that a reduction of 27% in BOD and 60% of suspended solids could be achieved by settling for 4-5 hours. Treatment with 400-500 mg/l of lime reduced the BOD to 300 mg/l and suspended solids to 320 mg/l and the chromium was removed to below the limit of detection. The lime-treated effluent can be further treated in an aerated lagoon of 5 days’ detention to bring the BOD down to about 30mg/l.
