Résumé :	Scatter cockle is a defect on New Zealand lamb skins, the histological nature of which has formerly only been investigated on samples from partly processed (pickled) skins. By using a novel sampling/processing technique, presumptive cockle nodules in green skin only 6 hours post flay were examined. The histology of such areas of skin reaction suggest that scatter cockle is a recurrent type 1 hypersensitivity perivascular dermatitic response of the skin. Parasites commonly induce such lesions, and as ovine stock in this country commonly carry a louse (Damalinia ovis) burden, this is suggested to be the causal agent of cockle.
