For several years now we have been working on the synthesis of tanning preparations which also have a full fatliquoring effect on leather 1-6. A chrome (III) salt was used for the synthesis of dual purpose self-emulsifiable preparations as a complex-forming agent. The reaction was carried out in ethylene glycol medium. Dissolving the chromium salt in non-aqueous solvents probably leads to the exchange of water molecules for molecules of the solvent. Such complexes are involved in further reactions of coordination, e.g. with the fat components.
The studies carried out in our laboratory show that the reaction of chromium chloride with sulphoxidised pig fat in ethylene glycol results probably in the formation of complex compounds of chromium with fats or their derivatives.
The dual purpose preparation was used for leather dressing. The compact-tanned leathers contained about 5 % of unextracted fat and were therefore fast to washing in water and organic solvents (dry cleaning). Such a high content of fat fixed in the leather indicates a fatliquoring mechanism different from the traditional one. As sulhoxidised pig fat is an extremely complex chemical system, we intend to provide evidence of the formation of chromium (III) complexes with organic ligands on the basis of studies carried out on model substance.
The purpose of the present study was the use of glycerol tristearate as simple fat for the synthesis of model tanning/fatliquoring preparations and investigation of the effect of non-aqueous solvent on the composition,structure and fastness of the products of reaction of chromium (III) with fats. |
