Most of the hide bacteria studied have mean generation times of less than 4 h, which means that under exponential growth rate conditions these bacteria double their number in less than 4 h. This fact and the rate of collagen decomposition by the collagenolytic bacteria can have a significant effect in commercial curing. Wet-blue (tannage)Peau tannée au chrome (le chrome donne une couleur bleue)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Sodium pentachlorophenate, pentachlorophenol, cresylic acid, beta naphthol and the proprietary products Busan 31, Busan 52, Busan 72, MTC 10 and Preventol have been tested at various concentration levels, added at different stages of processing, for the prevention of natural fungal growth on stored wet blue hides. Sodium pentachlorophenate, pentachlorophenol, cresylic acid and beta naphthol were not very effective in preventing fungal growth for the periods required for overseas delivery of wet blue hides, but could possibly be used at suitable concentrations for the internal short-term holding of wet blue stock in tanneries. The best overall results were obtained with Busan 72 which appeared effective in tannery trials even at concentrations below 0,025% of active ingredient. The numbers and collagenolytic activities of the hide bacteria were determined immediately after droping the animals and at various stages at both the abattoir and curing shed, prior to the addition of salt. The results indicated that the contamination of hides by collagenolytic bacteria, which cause leather decay, occurred on the living animal and not in the antiseptic abattoir and curing shed. These results emphasise the importance of avoiding delayed curing as the collagenolytic bacteria are already present in the hide and must be inhibited or destroyed as soon as possible. TachesIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Lime speck, which is first clearly recognised in the pickled pelt as white spots or areas, was experimentally shown to originate in the painted skin According to X-ray analysis and microscopical examination the defect is due to gypsum (CaS042H20) within the grain layer. While painted skin piled for one day before pulling remained clear, skin piled for three days or four days developed speck. The effect was aggravated at raised temperature and by drying, though skin which was still moist at the end of piling could also become speckled. X-ray analysis of limed, bated, and pickled pelts showed that calcium carbonate (in the form of calcite) was the precursor in the limed pelt of speck in the pickled. Nevertheless, calcium carbonate present as calcite in the lime used for the paint did not affect the incidence of speck. It appears that calcite as precursor is formed in situ and, so long as sufficient calcium ions and carbon dioxide are available, will form if, during piling, water is extracted from the system by the collagen fibres (tending to plump under the alkaline conditions) or by the fleece (competing with the pelt for water) or by evaporative drying.
The small amount of calcite found in the clear limed pelt appeared to have been directly transformed into gypsum in the clear pickled pelt, but an intermediate, vaterite—another form of calcium carbonate—occurred in the affected bated pelt: its role in the transformation to gypsum is not understood.
The practical implications of the work are: duration of piling should be kept short, skins should be piled cool and in a cool place, conditions encouraging skins to heat in pile and conditions that could allow evaporative drying to start should be avoided.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENT I : The effect of drying and duration in pile - X-ray diffusion analysis - Results

Tambours (tannage)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Tanning drums fitted with horizontal shelves and or stub pegs are now known to be poor mixers. Scaled experiments with Perspex model drums show that the mixing efficiency can be improved by replacing the traditional fittings with extra long flat-faced pegs (EL-pegs) angled preferably at 45° to the forward movement of the drum. For optimum effect the length of the EL-pegs requires to be at least 0.33 of the drum diameter. Cuttings, soaked for 15 min in saturated boric acid solution, were stored for five days at 30°c before attaining a volatile to total nitrogen ratio of 1%. Untreated cuttings attained this value in two days. In a laboratory experiment a boric acid bath was used 50 times without losing effectiveness. In a pilot scale experiment nine batches of hides, totalling 3100 kg, were soaked and stored for up to 29 days at 14°c. Essais (technologie)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Studies on the preservation of skins with antiseptics alone have been made for 20 days' storage at 25°c. These salt-free short-term preservation methods are important to the hide, skin, fellmongering and leather industry in combating salt effluent, particularly in inland areas. Physical tests on the garment leather produced from these antiseptic treated skins shows that this method is capable of preserving skins for 20 days at 25°c but visual assessment of leather and grain quality revealed that the antiseptic treated skins yielded leather which was in general of slightly inferior quality and with more grain blemishes. The reasons for this are under investigation. The results also show that sodium chlorite in the antiseptic mixture gives an inferior product. Nevertheless the results are encouraging for the development of a practical and economic method for the short-term preservation of hides and skins without salt. MesureIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The separation of the bench marks and jaws have been used to calculate the elongation at break of two leathers using the 1957 SLTC specimen shape and the current IUP/6 large specimen. Two tensometers were used, an Instron and a 250 kg Howden. The jaw design is crucial if jaw separation measurements are used. Positive clamping is essential and self-tightening jaws should be avoided. The IUP/6 specimen gave lower but more reproducible values than the 1957 SLTC specimen. Jaw separation measurements were more reproducible than those from bench marks.
In a separate experiment the three IUP/6 specimens, a modified version of the medium-size specimen and the 1957 SLTC specimen were compared. Seventeen leathers were tested using the Instron only. The results from the 1657 SLTC specimen by bench mark separation are very close to those obtained from the medium and small IUP/6 specimens by jaw separation. The large IUP/6 specimen gave lower but more reproducible values than any other specimen. The 1957 SLTC specimen gave worst reproducibility.Note de contenu : - COMPARISON OF 1957 AND THE LARGE IUP/6 SPECIMEN : Experimental - Results - Discussion
