SurfactantsIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Pigskin leather lias been manufactured on a regular basis over the years. Much of its has been suede rather than grain leather because of the methods used in processing hogs. With the advent of new equipment for pulling hogskins, this raw stock is hecoming a significant material for the production of quality leathers, but because of its unique characteristics, attention must be paid to specific steps in processing to achieve the best pigskin lias to offer. It is our position that the steps requiring extra care are :
1. Degreasing — to eliminate fat without solvent;
2. Beaming and bating — to sof ten the shell without ragging the belly and shoulder ;
3. Retanning — to produce uniformity in temper over the skin;
4. Finishing — to give tough films that will suit the elastic high grain of pigskin without opening on pull-up or will cover grain defects.
These areas are the particular ones we wish to discuss.Note de contenu : - Degreasing

initial plucking, to study the microscopic structure of the hair follicle at various phases of the growth cycle in the pig.
Induced anagen lasted approximately 135 days, producing an average of 0.4 mm. of hair per day. Catagen was a relatively brief phase (15-20 days) and the length of telogen was largely determined hy the climatic conditions. It was concluded that both anagen and telogen in the swine share the sanie characteristics described hy other investigators for other mammals, especially man. Catagen, however, differs slightly in that the epithelial strand carrying the presumptive club undergoes both multiplication and degeneration simultaneously, and that thickening of the connective tissue sheath does not aid in the shortening of the follicle.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1FvrvnCTqIvMvuw3ZGkDx4hQE952ZYc9g/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=41480

Poil -- CroissanceIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The results obtained support a concept of cyclic activity in the hair follicle of the pig. Due to seasonal changes in climatic conditions, the follicles alternated between active and dormant phases, resulting in the lors and production of a new coat once every year. The follicular activity followed a wave, starting on the abdomen, spreading laterally, and finally reaching the dorsum. Induced anagen lasted approximately 135 days, producing an average of 0.4 mm. of hair per day. Catagen was a relatively brief phase, and the length of telogen was largely determined by the climatic conditions. Hair density reached a maximum during the winter months and declined to a minimum during the summer months. Note de contenu : - Cyclic activity of the follicle

The system employs the use of a non-rewetting syntan and a non-rewetting fatliquor. Each is applied separately and is set with basic chromium sulfate, followed hy the use of a chrome stearato complex. The resultant leather loses very little oil during solvent extraction. The non-rewetting character is actually improved hy solvent treatment. This results in leathers having very good non-rewet and dry cleanable characteristics.
(Wikipedia)

It was important to perform the experiments under strictly monomeric condition, that is to say, at pH <6, to avoid polymerization of the reagent (as revealed hy light absorption at 235 nm.), which occurs when the pH is raised to >7.
The tanning of pig aortic valves and of pure collagen (our current work) was unsuitable for our purpose, as they hind glutaraldehyde very poorly at pH <6. The insolubilization by glutaraldehyde of different soluble proteins, at pH 5, as described hy Avrameas and Ternynck (preparation of immunoadsorbents) offered the conditions required for these experiments. Moreover, the reverse reaction, the solubilization, could he easily demonstrated.Note de contenu :

Produits synthétiquesIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Today the terms synthetic and natural fatliquoring agents are commonly used. But if you ask what synthetic fatliquoring agents are, you will get differing answers.
For many years fish oil, sperm oil, neat's-foot oil, castor oil and tallows were the main fatty raw materials used by the tanners. They were called, and I feel it is justified, natural fatliquoring agents. However, they are not used in their original form, but are chemically changed by sulfation, sulfitation, sulfonation, saponification, or ethoxylation to meet practical requirements.
These are just a few of many possible examples.
All these reactions are carried out to supply the tanner with fatliquoring agents which meet his requirements at reasonable prices. One could even say that raw materials should he chosen according to the economic situation. On account of the economic policy of the raw material countries bringing about a raw material shortage, suppliers of leather auxiliaries have to prepare from different raw ma-terials fatliquoring agents producing almost identical effects.Note de contenu : - 1. Ions cuivre
SolubilisationIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Evidence is presented that solutions of sodium perborate tetrahydrate in the presence of trace amounts of cupric ion cause solubilization of steerhide corium collagen at room temperature. Solubilization of the collagen occurs most readily in the pH range from 4 to 6; at pH 8 the attack is decreased, and at pH 3 it does not occur at room temperature. Solubilization proceeds much more readily at body temperature (37°C.) than at room temperature (21°C.). Compounds that sequester cupric ions (malonic and salicylic acids) and compounds that act as free radical scavengers (hydroquinone and diphenylamine) inhibit the solubilization to greater or lesser extents. The degradation, therefore, probably in-volves a free radical mechanism. Vapeur d'eauIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : This investigation is related to water vapor permeability and water absorption of natural and some synthetic uppers, shoe lining materials, and socks compared with the amount of sweat secretion of the foot. The physical characteristic values of the ahove mentioned materials for footwear are given in tables. The microclimate results of seven-hour wearing tests in a chamber are pigtured in several graphs. A discussion is given on why the relative humidities in these synthetic uppers and shoe linings reach unphysiological high values (more than 70 percent R.H.), whereas, on account of the high water vapor permeability of a box-calf or neat's leather, the humidity in shoes of these materials increases only for a short time during physical load. Even a very good sock is unable to store more than 15 percent by weight of sweat, and therefore it is incapable of improving the microclimate in shoes made of synthetics. The most decisive fact concerning comfort in footwear is the high water vapor permtability of all layers, while water and water vapor absorption are of secondary importance. Because of these facts, the overwhelming majority of synthetic footwear and man-made textile fibers must he improved. Note de contenu : - Introduction and physiological aspects of the root

Tannage végétalIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Since the introduction of this system of tannage in South Africa in 1960, the method has been adopted hy most of the important vegetable leather tanners in the U.S.A. and Canada, and is also in use in Australia and Japan. A considerable amount of practical experience has been gained, and tanners have exercised their ovin initiative in adapting it to suit their plant and requirements. In recent years it has been modified to suit harness, saddlery, and helting leathers, as well as a combination of these products from the same liquors.
The original description of this tannage as a "no-effluent" system implied the closed recirculation of the tan liquors. However the ever tightening standards faced hy tanners have made it desirable to ahsorh the subsequent wash and bleach liquors into the system, and this has become possible in view of the availability of spray-dried powdered extracts with reduced water content, and the elimination of the soda acid bleach of leather from the circulators, and by changing hlends to avoid large tan molecules accumulating in the grain of the leather.Note de contenu : - Fundamental principles involved

Peaux brutesIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : In view of the continued interest in unhairing, especially as it relates to pollution from the tanning industry, it seemed imperative that we publish additional information that we have accumulated in support of the β-elimination reaction as the mechanism of the initial reactions taking place in hair protein during alkaline unhairing. We feel that workers in the field should have the latest information available about the chemistry of the systems with which they are working.
In 1973 we published the results of our research that led us to propose the β-elimination reaction mechanism. This proposal was based on the types and amounts of amino acids either reacting or forming during exposure of hair to various unhairing conditions. We have since accumulated additional evidence that further substantiates that the p-elimination reaction takes place when hair is exposed to alkali with or without additional reagents being present. This additional evidence is divided into three parts : the finding of additional reaction products, primarily amino acid derivatives ; chemical studies on the reaction of cystine itself in alkali ; and studies using radioactive sulfide in an unhairing reaction.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL :

GlycoprotéinesIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : A glycoprotein was isolated from young albino rat skins by extraction of the minced skins with ten percent sodium chloride solution, precipi-tation with ammonium sulfate, and chromatography on Sephadex G-100 and DEAE-cellulose. The molecular weight of the glycoprotein was of the order of 65,000 as determined hy gel filtration. Its carhohydrate moiety was found to he composed of galactose, mannose, glucose, fucose, N-acetylglucosamine, and sialic acids. The glycoprotein lacked hydroxyproline, which suggests that it is noncollagenous in nature. Note de contenu : - Isolation of noncollagenous glycoproteins from albino rat skins

sulfite de sodiumIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Fresh cowhides were treated with solutions of sodium sulfite and acetic acid by two different methods. Some of the hides were treated by drumming in a 20 percent float ; the others were treated with a more concentrated solution in a spray tunnel. After storage for seven days in closed harrels at ambient temperatures, the bides were processed into side upper leather without modification of standard tannery processes.
The hides treated by drumming produced leather equal or superior
in quality to the controls. Use of the more concentrated solution applied by spraying produced leather with unacceptably loose break.
The results demonstrate that a sulfite and acetic acid preservation can he adapted to current leather processing methods under tannery conditions to produce commercial quality side upper leather. This method provides the tanner with an alternative to fresh or salt cured hides.Note de contenu : - Preservation test 1

The physical properties also were compared for defective and normal leathers.
Samples of fresh ked-infested and uninfested sheepskins from three body locations, preserved with three fixatives, were evaluated hy several procedures for evidence of abnormal components such as inflammatory cells and interfibrillar cementing material. The results confirmed other reports of the increase in cellular infiltration in the grain (papillary) layer of infested skin, particularly hy eosinophilic leukocytes, which indicated an allergie reaction. Eosinophiles were also prevalent in the corium (reticular) layer. No other unusual interfibrillar material was found, nor was collagen composition nor elastic tissue content altered.
Standard strength and density measurements on garment suede and slipper upper leathers produced from normal and ked-infested sheepskin showed no difference in apparent density, but, more important, they showed lower strength and greater stiffness values for defective than for normal leathers. The reduced strength has not heen demonstrated before.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Skin samples for histology - Histological procedures - Microscopy - Hemetological and amino acid analyses - Leather samples for physical testing - Density - Physical strength tests

Wet-blue (tannage)Peau tannée au chrome (le chrome donne une couleur bleue)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The previously described ERRL penetrometer was applied to butt samples from 185 blue sides, after splitting for grain upper leather, to evaluate its accuracy in selecting the weak sides in the lot at an intermediate stage of processing. Two new types of needles were compared with the one previously used ; these evaluations were supplemented by microscopic and ball-burst tests. Corresponding samples were similarly tested at the crust and finished stages.
Scoring of the composite data identified 34 weak sides in the lot, many with vertical fiber defect. Using appropriate cutoff points as a basis for sorting, each of the three needles gave acceptable results, but the one with a 100 taper was superior for several reasons. It improved the concentration of strong sides from the original 82 percent to a final 94 percent in the strong sort while segregating a weak group with 71 percent accuracy, which compared reasonably with experimental sorting in the crust by the destructive hall-burst or microscopie tests. Good correlation was also shown statistically between penetrometer measurements in the blue and hall-burst in the crust. This good predictability, coupled with its sorting performance and nondestructive nature, makes the penetrometer test a useful and practical tool for sorting blue stock after splitting. Other comparisons of test values with the ball-burst, within and between different stages of processing, were also evaluated in the form of correlation coefficients.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL :

Tannage végétalIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : The unique fiber structure of buffalo bides as distinct from those of other cattle hides envisages a different sampling position. The problem was posed by the International Standards Organization to arrive at the proper sampling position based on Indian buffalo hides, India being the major producer of buffalo bides. Buffalo bides were collected from different regions of India and tanned by the conventional vegetable tanning system, the leathers sampled from different locations, and the test specimens thus obtained suhjected to physical testing and chemical analysis. The data were statistically analyzed and the position recording the maximum number of least standard deviations was adjudged as the best sampling position. The conclusion is that the location at 240 mm. from the line of backbone at the area of the butt and 100 mm. from the root of the tail (each multiplied by the correction factor, which is the ratio of the length in mm. of the individual hide to 1750 mm., the average length of Indian huffalo hides) is suitable for carrying out both physical testing and chemical analysis. Wet-blue (tannage)Peau tannée au chrome (le chrome donne une couleur bleue)Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Studies concerned with loss of strength on drying for side upper leather submitted by six tanneries and sampled after five process steps revealed that there is a relationship between the strength of the leather and its moisture content. Leather from only one of the tanneries was resistant to high temperatures. While there was a sequential improve¬ment in the leather as it was processed from the split wet-blue stage to the staked leather, it was shown that the improvements were never suffi-. cient to change the leather from an "over 50 percent strength loss level" to an "under 50 percent strength loss level." It was concluded that the wet-blue stock to hegin with should have resistance to loss of strength on drying, and there were indications that beamhouse processes affect this property.
