Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : An electrodialysis cell has been designed so that a one inch square of hide may be inserted into the center compartment without disassembling the cell. The two electrode compartments are arranged for continuous flushing with water to present accumulation of high concentrations of electrolyte or gases within these chambers and to provide cooling for the cell.
The conditions necessary to obtain quantitative recoveries of electrolyte are discussed and some applications to pickled hide analysis are presented.Note de contenu : - The cell

Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The possible protective action of 12 acid dyes in the degradation of steerhide corium collagen by the cupric ion/hydrogen peroxide system was studied. This system in the absence of the dyes completely solu¬bilizes collagen in a few days at room temperature. The dyes used were of two types: (a) 1:2 pre-metallized dyes, containing one metal atom chelated to two dye molecules, and (b) non-metallized acid dyes of the anthraquinone ( alizarine) type. Dye concentrations in the solutions ranged from 0.005 to 0.5 percent. The pre-metallized dyes containing cobalt showed no effect on the solubilization of the collagen by the cupric ion/hydrogen peroxide system, whereas most of the dyes containing chromium inhibited the degradation. The anthraquinone dyes gave even better protection, three of the four used inhibiting the reaction almost completely at the highest concentration used. Possible mechanisms for the protective action and possible practical applications of dyes in protecting leather from photodegradation are discussed. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL :

Vapeur d'eauIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The ability of footwear components to absorb perspiration has been widely recognized as essential for comfort. Past methods of measuring this property stopped short of making the distance between the source of moisture and the test material as small as it actually is within a shoe because of the ever present possibility of direct contact between the two parallel surfaces. Earlier attempts to overcome this condition by the use of a plastic mat or of insect screens are described. The problem was finally solved by using a hydrophobic microporous cellulose ester filter, 0.15 mm. thick, which allowed water vapor, but not liquid water, to pass from the moist felt simulating the skin surface to the materials to be evaluated for their absorptive capacity. The procedure that was developed takes into account the fact that this property is more critical for materials used in footwear bottoms than for those in uppers. Most of the work reported, therefore, was done on leather and nonleather insoles which were placed on socks or on materials used for lining shoes. The results are primarily presented in charts illustrating the moisture pickup over five-hour periods. The degree of realism possible by the new method is discussed by comparing it with results of actual wear tests published elsewhere. Note de contenu : - Results by procedure finally adopted

Animal fibers, such as collagen, silk, and wool, showed a remarkably high absorption, while synthetic fibers, such as Tetron and Vinylon, had the lowest. This phenomenon was correlated with water vapor absorbability of the fibers mentioned above. The absorption of tar by collagen fibers was improved by an increase in moisture content of the fibers and by an à kali pretreatment of the fibers. However, all tanning treatments reduced absorption of tar; the reduction was greatest with chrome tanning and least with vegetable tanning, formaldehyde tannage giving an intermediate value.

Système pileuxIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Amino acid analyses of hair samples resulting from both good and bad unhairing practices have revealed that considerable change is taking place in the protein. Hair samples recovered from treatments including the use of sodium sulfide contain large amounts of lanthionine. In the presence of lime alone, lesser amounts are formed and, in addition, a new amino acid, lysinoalanine, is also formed. Both of these are probably re-sponsible for immunization of the hair to further dissolution. The amino acid serine is partly destroyed in this process and is also converted to lanthionine and lysinoalanine. When dimethylamine is used with lime, with or without sulfide, still another new amino acid is formed, f3-dimethylaminoalanine. All these data are best explained by a "B-elimination" mechanism rather than by a substitution mechanism for the action of lime and unhairing agents on the hair that does not dissolve in a hair-saving process. The results still do net clarify what is happening when the hair dissolves. Note de contenu : - Unhairing reactions

For a number of reasons, butyl acrylate w•as found to be the monomer of choice. The product containing 13 percent poly( butyl acrylate), at least partially grafted to the collagen, had an increased thickness, the appearance of having been fatliquored, and a high degree of area stability. In addition, it had not suffered any decreases in shrinkage temperature or strength. The process was also applied to chrome-tanned kangaroo skins with the same beneficial results. Basic conditions of leatherboard manufacture were investigated. Materials used for the leatherboard were chrome collagen fiber, cotton, kraft pulp, and chrome shavings. The results of the experiment were as follows: 1) The time required for beater treatment was two hours for a mixture of one part chrome collagen fiber and one part cotton (Material A), four hours for a mixture of one part chrome collagen aber and one part kraft pulp (Material B), and eight hours for a mixture of three parts chrome collagen fiber, three parts shavings, and four parts kraft pulp (Material C). 2) The optimum fiber length of chrome collagen fiber was 0.5 cm. for Material A, but the fiber length of chrome collagen fiber had little effect in the cases of Materials B and C. 3) With regard to the ratio of materials, a ratio of at least over 40 percent cotton or kraft pulp is desirable. When shavings are used, the ratio should be not more than 20 percent. 4) With regard to the binder for the leatherboard components, there is no difference between ethyl acrylate and butadiene-acrylonitrile, and a satisfactory effect can be obtained with either of them with an impregnated quantity of 10 to 20 percent. 1. Characteristics of some domesticated sheep and their pelts which are used for leathers ;
2. A summary of a meat producers' association commercial process used to prepare pickled sheepskins for the tanner's use ;
3. Some data on problem pickled sheepskins, as gathered from suppliers of the skins and from unusual leather results in the tannery. Considered in particular were conditions found in pickled sheepskins that are sometimes described by tanners as "lime," "drawn" necks and butts, and "chicken vire" ;
4. Some corrective processes for problem lots of pickled skins, according to good tannery practice and economic return. The tanner can alleviate during the course of his operations some of the defects that appear in his leathers : those due to conditions in his original raw stock of probable residual lime, drawn grain, "chicken wire" or checkered effect on the surface, or a combination of these difficulties.Note de contenu : - Some guidelines for tanning sheepskin leathers

The rate of denaturation of purified sait-soluble collagen was determined by the release of amino acids, and considerable collagenolytic activity was demonstrated in raw and cured hides. Collagenolysis was observed only under aerobic conditions and was highest at salt concentrations below 7.0 percent (w/v) NaCI. Raw hide bacteria showed the highest initial rate of collagenolysis. Bacteria from Batch 4 cured hides, which produced good leather with little decay, had the lowest collagenolytic activity. Sulfate de chromeIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : The use of gel filtration has been studied as a method for estimating the distribution of the sizes of species present in a 33% basic chromium (III) sulfate solution. All species present were excluded from Sephadex G 10 and G 15 gels but on a G 25 gel a separation was effected into two major and one minor fractions. The effect of pH and ionic strength on the shape of the elution profile has been investigated. The two major fractions have been characterized by their visible ab-sorption spectra, their Cr(III) : SO4 ratios, and their behavior on ion-exchange paper chromatography. All these properties suggest that the more rapidly eluted fraction is enriched in a non-sulfato polynuclear Cr(III) species and that the more slowly eluted fraction contains largely sulfato binuclear Cr (III) species. Tannage Résumé : The results presented in this paper indicate that a method of sorting a random lot of sides in the blue, either before or after splitting, can probably be developed which will pick out nearly all of the very weak hides and some of those of questionable strength without picking any of the sides with average strength or stronger. A few sides of questionable strength will probably be undetected.
Values from a needle puncture test applied to unsplit sides gave excellent correlation with a lasting factor determined on the finished leather, as did values from an experimental machine designed to measure distortion under controlled conditions, when applied to split sides. A compression test on unsplit sides was not useful.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL :

The purple color was extracted with chloroform. Further purification produced a dark purple wax which was tentatively identified as a phosphate ester and calcium soap of a dihydroxyamino-p-benzo-quinone. Note de contenu : - INTRODUCTION :

Cuirs et peaux de bovinsIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : A differential thermal analyzer was developed which is capable of measuring the relative content of undenatured collagen in a comminuted cattle hide. The technique is based on the endothermic phase change which takes place when collagen is heated in the presence of excess water. The analyzer was designed to study large (75 g.) representative samples of comminuted hide. It was evaluated by testing tailor-made samples containing known percentages of heat-denatured hide collagen. The data indicate that the precision of the measurements was ten percent or better. For example, in the baking industry, the pans are coated with a fluorocarbon polymer to provide easy cleaning properties.
The nature of leather is such that, in order to prepare an acceptable finish, a unique set of polymer properties is required. This paper de-scribes the characteristics of the polymers needed to provide a finish having satisfactory "filling," flexibility, and adhesion.Note de contenu : - INTRODUCTION :

Crosslinking in the base coat contributes to improved wet and dry abrasion resistance, Bally flexibility, and dryclean fastness. Finish extensibility is lowered with increasing crosslink density. The advantageous use of a reactive base coat under a high performance polyurethane top coat is illustrated. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL :
