The conservation of reindeer skins is a very important process in determining the properties of the resultant leather. Commonly the skins are salted where the reindeer are slaughtered, but, because of the cold climate in artic and subartic zones, the partially frozen skins do not obtain a uniform cure. The frozen areas which are not adequately cured are thus prone to microorganisms, with the result that local skin defects are often generated. These defects can be seen in the skin as translucent patches, especially after the dehairing process in leather production. These defects also have some influence on the properties and use of skin and leather.
This study sets out to investigate the properties of the skin and leather of the semi-domestic reindeer(Rangifer tarandus tarandus). Inherent conditions such as breed, climate, diet, sex and age greatly influence the quality of reindeer skin, as do many kinds of skin defencts.Parasitic infestations in reindeer often cause the leather industry heavy losses. |
