Résumé : |
The mechanical properties or partially processed leather were measured as a function of moisture content in the range 10% to 67%. At high moisture contents the stress -strain curve had a characteristic 'J' shape with an initially low slope which increased again dramatically above a given strain. At lower values of moisture content the stress-strain curve acquired an 'S' shape with an initially high slope which reduced above 3% strain but increased again at higher strains. The initial set of the leathers following a period under 20% strain increased as their water content was reduced. It was also found that following release of the applied strain set reduced more rapidly in the wetter leathers.
When measured as a function of time of applied strain the amount of stress-relaxation which occured could be related to the degree of set. However stress-relaxation was found to vary in a complex way with moisture content and did not predict the dependence of set on moisture content.
It is conclued that the microstructural deformation mechanisms, that are responsible for set, change with moisture content. |
