During the course of our studies on the detection and determination of arylamines from azo dyestuffs by GC-MS, two additional peaks with m/z 256 and 279 amu respectively were observed. The peaks were identified as due to sulphur formed from sodium ditionite used for the reductive cleavage of the azo groups and from dioctyl phthalate, a contaminant of the chromatographic system. Even though these compounds do not undergo fragmentation to produce ions having masses identical with that of the 20 aryl amines forbidden by the German Government, co-elution of these compounds with any of the arylamines in question will result in complex mass spectra possibly leading to unreliable analytical reports. |
