Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Plastic substrates often offer an unfriendly surface for coating applications, resulting in insufficient adhesion of applied coatings, inks, and adhesives. This paper presents a new priming process which overcomes the problem of poor adhesion of ultraviolet (UV)-curable coatings on plastic surfaces. In this process, the plastic surface is activated by a plasma or corona treatment and then a special primer composition is applied as a thin layer to form a covalently attached primer. The thermally stable primer layer contains latent groups, which can react with the UV-curable coating under UV light exposure. This novel process produces significantly enhanced adhesion to plastic substrates. Experimental results, applications examples, and perspectives are discussed further. Plastic materials have inherently low wettability, mainly due to the lack of polar functional group on the surface, resulting in adhesion failure of inks, adhesives and varnishes. Ciba Speciality Chemicals have developed Ciba Prime IT, an innovative, patented technology to improve adhesion of UV-curable inks, coatings and adhesives on plastics. Adhesion of UV inks on plastics is sometimes poor, making it necessary to use physical or chemical treatments (as primers).
Compared to Prime IT, conventional chemical treatment require higher quantities of product and additional procedures, involving for example the use of solvent and/or less environmentally compatible chemicals, while physical treatments such as corona have stability problems.Note de contenu : - Challenges
