Spectroscopie d'impédance électrochimiqueIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : It has been common to assess corrosion inhibitors by ranking their relative corrosion currents at some arbitrary potential above the open circuit potential via DC potentiodynamic anodic scans. Grose-close et al.1 demonstrated that when bare steel panels are subjected to such scans, the difference in mV between the open circuit potential and breakdown potential is a sensitive measure of the panels' tendency to corrode once coated and exposed to a corrosive environment. The present authors show that a combination of the two DC electrochemical techniques can be used to assess the relative corrosion (or inhibition) contribution of various ingredients in water-based coatings, and that those results translate into the same order of behavior when coatings utilizing those ingredients were applied to steel and tested in a corrosive environment. This technique is also shown to be capable of ranking finished liquid paints for their subsequent corrosion resistance as dried coatings on steel, and verifying the batch consistency of liquid paints in production. TopographieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : High throughput combinatorial characterization was performed on thermosetting siloxane-urethane coatings in order to find a correlation between the characterization techniques, surface topography, and adhesion strength of barnacles. A series of coatings having microtopographical surfaces with different domain sizes were prepared based on a thermosetting siloxane-urethane system. This microtopography was formed spontaneously during the film-formation process. These surfaces were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), surface energy, dynamic contact angle, and pseudo barnacle pull-off adhesion and were compared to pure polyurethane (PU) and silicone rubber control. Surface energy and dynamic contact angles were measured by an automated surface energy measurement system and pull-off adhesion values were obtained from a high throughput pull-off adhesion measurement unit. The results were compared with the adhesion strength of barnacles. ViscositéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The viscous response of a coating formulation changes over several orders of magnitude after application onto a substrate. Furthermore, the performance and application attributes for a refinish basecoat formulation are slightly different from those of an OEM basecoat. The absence of a high temperature baking step during the refinish process necessitates that the paint exhibit very good antisag behavior as well as quick 'dry to touch' without compromising the flow and leveling properties of the coating as it dries. As most paint formulations are multicomponent in nature, it is always a challenge to precisely measure the impact of specific formulation components on the collective performance attributes of the applied coating. In this work, the focus has been to develop novel techniques that can be used to demonstrate a more quantitative measure of some of the performance attributes that rheological additives like cellulose esters can provide to automotive coatings. A series of pigmented basecoat formulations were prepared which contained cellulose acetate butyrates (CABs) of varying molecular weights at different levels based on the total solids of the coating formulation. The nonvolatile content of the formulations was also varied. The viscoelastic behavior of a typical automotive basecoat formulation during the drying process was then investigated using a novel rheological technique. Complex viscosity data (including storage and loss moduli as well as tan delta) were determined as a function of drying time and then compared to the macroscopic properties typically associated with a coating film as it dries. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was also used to correlate the rheology of the metallic basecoat formulations with drying behavior of the coating. The final appearance of the coating was investigated by several microscopic techniques such as Laser Scanning Confocal Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Atomic Force Microscopy, and Surface Profilometery, and attempts were made to correlate bulk measurements like 'flop index' with the microstructure of the coating. VitrificationIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Ambient, amine-cured epoxy compositions exist within the dual constraints of VOC regulation and the vitrification effect, which limits the ultimate Tg of these materials. These combined constraints result in epoxy products that are densely crosslinked and which contain appreciable quantities of nonfugitive diluents or plasticizers. Such materials tend to be more brittle than traditional solvent-based epoxy coatings based on solid epoxy resin and polyamide hardeners. There is thus a need for a practical method to measure their fracture toughness. This work introduces the method of essential work as a useful way to determine the fracture toughness of thermoset systems. This method is then used to relate fracture toughness to the crosslink network structures of amine-cured epoxy compositions. The test compositions are varied systematically with a view to structure/properties interpretation, and employ an in situ chain extension approach to "grow" more ductile networks. Solvent uptake of selected compositions is also determined, and the relative trade-off between ductility vs. solvent uptake is examined. Revêtements en phase aqueuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The potentiometric titration of carboxylated methyl methacrylate latexes prepared with varying amounts of methacrylic acid showed that only very small amounts of their total acids copolymerized were neutralized at room temperature until the acid level was well above 10%. However, it was found that all the acids copolymerized were completely titrated either in a 50/50 water/ethanol mixture at room temperature or in water at high temperatures near their backbone polymer Tgs, regardless of their acid contents, as predicted from the existing theories on the alkaliswelling of carboxylated latexes. It was also found that these high-temperature alkali-swollen latex particles remained in the swollen state even after they were cooled down to room temperature and became film-forming at much lower temperatures. This discovery led to a new technology coined as a high-temperature water-extended latex technology. This new technology enabled us to develop VOC-free water-extended latexes of high-Tg polymers that would exhibit good film formation at ambient temperature and turn into hard and non-blocking latex films and latex-bound pigmented coatings upon drying. Particularly, when fugitive bases were used for neutralization at high temperatures, the resulting water-extended latexes became hard, non-blocking, and water-resistant binders upon drying. ZéolitesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The purpose of this paper was to evaluate the performance of a modified zeolite as an anticorrosive pigment for paints. A procedure to prepare the pigment was outlined and its anticorrosive properties assessed following the electrochemical behavior of a steel electrode in pigment suspension. In a second stage, alkyd paints were formulated employing different anticorrosive pigments: (1) 30% by volume (v/v) of the modified zeolitic rock, (2) 10% (v/v) of zinc phosphate, and (3) a mixture of 10% (v/v) zinc phosphate plus 20% (v/v) of the modified zeolitic rock. In every case, percentages were referred to the total pigment content. Titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, and barium sulfate were incorporated to complete the pigment formula. The pigment volume concentration/ critical pigment volume concentration (PVC/CPVC) ratio was 0.8. The performance of the resulting anticorrosive paints was assessed by accelerated (salt spray and humidity chambers) tests and electrochemical (corrosion potential, ionic resistance, and polarization resistance) essays. It was demonstrated that the modified zeolite is effective in protecting steel from corrosion when it is used in combination with zinc phosphate. There exists a synergism between the modified zeolite and zinc phosphate that allows the zinc phosphate content in anticorrosive paints to be reduced. ViscositéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Due to limited fossil resources and an increased need for environmentally friendly, sustainable technologies, the importance of using renewable feedstocks in the paint and coatings area will increase in the decades to come. This paper highlights some of the perspectives in this area. Alkyd resins for high-solid paints and reactive diluents, completely based on commercially available renewable resources, were prepared and characterized. Alkyd resins based on sucrose and unsaturated fatty acids or oils showed a low intrinsic viscosity, making them suitable to be used in high-solid alkyd paints. Reactive diluents based on similar starting materials showed excellent properties with regard to thinning behavior and effect on drying characteristics. Powder coating polyester resins were synthesized, starting from isosorbide and diacids. Polyester resins with glass transition temperatures up to 70°C were obtained. Incorporation of small amounts of other diols and trifunctional components was found to improve color and coating properties. In order to create completely renewable resin systems, the development of renewable drying agents for alkyds and crosslinkers for powder coatings is in progress. Revêtements en phase aqueuse:Peinture en phase aqueuseIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Waterborne alkyd and acrylic resins can be modified with silicone intermediates to improve their weather resistance in paints for exterior applications. The alkyds are modified through copolymerization before dispersion in water, using formulations and process conditions that minimize the tendency to gel. Acrylic latexes can be post treated with selected silicone intermediates at ambient temperature to give hybrid coating binders. In both cases, the gloss retention and chalking resistance of paint films are greatly increased. Salissures biologiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The widely recognized biofouling phenomenon has many negative consequences for artificial structures that are in contact with seawater in the form of structural defects and additional expenses for maritime companies due to cleaning and prevention processes. After having analyzed the serious environmental problems caused by an indiscriminate use of highly toxic biocides coming from organic derivatives of tin compounds and the uncontrolled emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOC) to the atmosphere, the evolving technology of antifouling paintings (further mandated by current environmental standards) aims to develop environmentally innocuous water-based coverings in which extracts of the very same marine world are used as biocide compounds. Water-based coatings are being developed that use low-toxic elements and natural biocides, where bacteria is isolated from surfaces immersed in the marine environment, creating a promising source of natural antifouling compounds. The result is a new environmentally friendly antifouling coating that is able to mitigate the problem of biofouling without affecting the surrounding medium, and which may be applied on any artificial structure in contact with seawater. Consequently, modified wettability of wood can change its behavior with coating or gluing processes. The authors investigated the wettability of oil-heat-treated and DMDHEU-modified Scots pine wood with some commercial waterborne coatings. The increased hydrophobic character of modified wood was revealed from high advancing contact angles of water. In contrast, exterior waterborne coatings exhibited much better wetting on modified substrates than on unmodified substrates. Good wetting of modified wood by waterborne coatings is an interesting result, opening up possibilities for application of environmentally friendly waterborne surface systems on modified wood. The method involved treating 90 µm thick plywood sections, which had been cut transversely through the wood-coating interface using a sliding microtome, with osmium tetroxide (OsO4) prior to examination with a field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) operating in backscattered electron imaging (BEI) mode. The combination of OsO4 staining and use of FE-SEM-BEI afforded excellent contrast differentiation between the coating and wood cell walls, revealing coating penetration into even nano-size cell wall cracks and delaminations formed during band-sawing of the plywood. The novel technique described adds a new dimension to probing wood-coating interface.
les polyoléfines thermoplastiques semi-cristallines : polyéthylène (PE), polypropylène (PP), polyméthylpentène (PMP), polybutène-1 (PB-1) ;

Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Polyolefins are used over a wide range of industries due to their low cost and adaptable mechanical properties. However, their low surface energy makes fabricating composites and applying coatings challenging. Therefore, various surface treatments have been utilized to enhance their adhesion properties. In this paper, the surface energies of various thermoplastic polyolefins (TPO) have been measured via Inverse Gas Chromatography (IGC). These surface energy values were correlated to mechanical adhesion testing of the painted polyolefins. The adhesive integrity of the painted TPO was determined by applying a comprehensive-shear load to the material. Higher surface energies measured by IGC lead to increased adhesion with the paint. The surface energies also correlate with TPO crystallinity, as determined by microhardness testing of the unpainted TPO.
