Staking is carried out by repeatedly stretching leather by small amouts. We have investigated the machanisme and reversibility of staking by measuring the emission of acoustic signals while leather was repeatedly stretched at different humidities. The first stretch was accompanied by the largest number of acoustic pulses, the acoustic emission accompanying the succeeding ones being reduced by almost 90%, and the leather was softer (modulus was decreased) after the first stretch. The most significant finding was that, when the stretched leather was stored for three months, its acoustic emissions and stiffness recovered. This means that staking, unlike fatliquor-softening, is not a permanent treatment if the leather is maintained in a dry environment, such as that found indoors in northern climates in winter. |
