Citrate, tartrate, and acetate-masked basic aluminum chloride solutions were stored in the acidic medium (pH 2.3 to 4.2) and analyzed for the proportion of polynuclear fractions of complexes by size-exclusion chromatography (SEC). Polynuclear fractions in citrate or tartrate-masked samples decreased clearly with lowering pH and prolong storage as well as with dilution as judged by SEC. In contrast, the polynuclear fractionsin acetate-masked and unmasked basic aluminum chloride indicated a significantly high stability under the same conditions. It is explained in terms of the higher stability of olated complexes that constitute the polynuclear fractions of both samples. The proposed SEC method can serve to evalute the stability of polynuclear fractions of masked aluminum tanning agents in acidic medium. |
