Résumé : |
The National Cattlemen's Association sponsored the "Strategic Alliance Project" as a direct result of the 1991 National Beef Quality Audit. This was a group effort of the cow-calf producers, a feedlot operator, a packer, a meat purveyor and a retailer to :
1) Produce a group of cattle by State Of The Art methods.
2) Evaluate the quality and costs of these animals.
3) Compare these cattle to a baseline of average lots being produced in the same time period.
This project was managed by the National Cattlemen's Association with the cooperation of the Colorado State University and Texas A&M University (1993).
Fifteen different pens of cattle were assembled at different cow-calf operations, with about 80 to 90 head per pen. The selection was based on similarity of breed, size, confirmation and general health. All pertinent information was tracked from calf through the final evaluations. The fifteen pens were fed at a feedlot in Oberlin, Kansas ant the calves were supplied from locations in Nebraska, South Dakota, Montana and Wyoming.
The target for completion of feeedint was the first to occur with a 0.4 inch backfat (measured ultrasonically) or 1050 to 1150 pounds of live animal weight. All animals were "harvested" in 1993 and evaluated. All of the information was compared on a lot by lot basis. The "baseline" was the production averages on all hides that were processed in the same time period.
The Strategic Alliances Project produced cattle hides that were quite uniform within each individual group, but are quite different from group to group. These differences appear to be primarily due to different genetic origins. |
