These bleaches are often ineffecive and leave the product a pale yellow to brown colour. A new method of bleaching which uses chlorine dioxide is described. This method is effective with products made from intestine but may be less successful with those prepared from hide. Instrumental assessment of the colour of these products is found to be unsatisfactory in comparison with visual assessment. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Increased understanding of the role played by proteoglycans in determining opening-up, which in many bovine leather processes occurs concurrently with depilation, has enabled us to advance the whole concept of beamhouse work.
By combining selected proteolytic enzymes with conventional unhairing chemicals the tanner is provided with a range of options which include :
1. Accelerated processing
2. Increased opening-up of the fibre structure
3. Improved pulping and/or reduction of the requirement for sulphide
4. Replacement of the traditional bating step
5. Reduction of growth and mottle
6. Increased strength of grain leather
7. Increased area yield
Initial studies with bovine hide showed that the proteolytic action during liming speeded up removal of dermatan sulphate proteoglycan and accelerated the opening-up of the collagen fibre structure, allowing a reduction in sulphide unhairing/liming time from 18 hours to six hours. The effect was most marked in the comparatively difficult to open-up neck region and grain layer. In practical terms this greatly facilitates production of well opened-up wet blue under the constraints of a 24 hour raw to wet blue process.

Ammonia removal efficiency in the stripping column was a strong function of the liquid/gas flow rate ratio. At air loading rates of 630-830 cfm/ft² column cross-sectional area, high ammonia removal efficiencies (>95%) could only be achieved at liquid loading rates of 1.5 gpm/ft² column cross-sectional area or less. Tannage Résumé : This paper discusses lan treatment as an alternative method to treat wastewaters and sludges from leather manufacturing. Concepts from environmental, civil and agricultural engineering are presented in three parts. The first part is a general description of principles, terminology, operating systems and applicability to tanneries. Following sections are more technical, covering stabilization mechanisms in soil, and hydrolic and other process controls to promote efficiency and environmental safety. A conceptual model of waste and liquid movement in soil is developed in order that process design can be done as in conventional waste treatment plants. The hoped-for result is optimum communication between wastewater generators, regulators, consultants and treatment system operators. An extensive reference list is included to assist in further study. Solvent-containing prepolymers (having free isocyanate groups) or fully reacted polymers were emulsified using proprietary surfactants. In this process, mechanical equipment that would provide the necessary shear to prepare a fine particle size system was necessary.
The later types of urethane emulsions are solvent free. By incorporating emulsifying groups into the prepolymer backbone, it is possible to prepare emulsions using conventional mixing equipment.
The chemistry of these products is reviewed. Their properties compared to conventional finishing systems for basecoats and topcoats are described.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/119S5vUo72rNnwJWd41WkYyd4SPgEPvgc/view?usp=share [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9172

Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : The use of linear polyphosphates as pretannages for promoting quick vegetal tanning penetration rates has proceeded without much consideration of the theoretical aspects of polyphosphate chain length mediation of penetration. Polyphosphates are available in a range of chain lengths and empirical evidence suggests those of between 5 and 15 phosphate units as most beneficial. Polyphosphates are known to increase shrinkage temperature and this is shown to occur with increasing chain length. Consideration of spatial dimensions together with experimental evidence allows a theory to be proposed accounting for polyphosphates in sufficient intermolecular crosslinking occurs to prevent acidic swelling of the fibres and a low degree of permeability results. With very large polyphosphates there is sufficient multipoint intermolecular binding to suppress swelling but the physical size of the bound polyphosphates block the access channels available for vegetable tanning penetration and hence result in slow rates of penetration. Medium chain length polyphosphates exhibit sufficient intermolecular crosslinking potential to inhibit swelling but are small enough to allow the quick passage of vegetable tanning into the interior of the hide. Both temperatures are sensitive to beaming and tanning processes, but the enthalpiy of denaturation remains constant at 13 cal/g in all but tanned samples. It is concluded that there are two populations of collagen in the hide in commensurate amounts; only the heat sensitivity of the less stable population is indicated by the shrinkage temperature as usually measured. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Small-angle light scattering (SALS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to determine the distributions of fiber orientations in stretched calfskin, and a dynamic technique was used to measure the elastic modulus at a small (0.1%), non-perturbing, oscillating deformation. The elastic modulus increases by over an order of magnitude when the wet skin is stretched by only 10% before the measurement is made. The results are interpreted by a stochastic model of fiber orientation that includes the orientation of fibers and their straightening out from slack configurations into the load-bearing structure. An equation is delived that accurately describes the course of the modulus-extension curve of the wet skin over a range of pH from 3 to 7, and allows the calculations of the orientation parameter and the statistical parameters of the slack fibers. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Extremely halophilic bacteria are physiologically unique bacteria. Such unique halophilic bacteria are probably common seasonally on cured hides and in curing brines. The halophiles have been associated with bright pink, red and purple discolorations on salt-cured hides for many years but have not been definitively linked to hide substance deterioration. Several extremely halophilic bacterial types were isolated from cured hides and hide curing brines for study. Several of these isolates were found to be capable of digesting hide protein. A high correlation between collagenolytic activity and gelatinolytic activity was noted, thus indicating a simple and quick potential test for hide damaging halophiles.
One of the more potent hide damaging halophiles was studied more closely. This halophile is similar in many major characteristics to Halobacterium salinarium. The one significant dissimilarity is that this halophile, as well as all other halophilic isolates, grew well in nutrient broth supplemented with a small amount of gelatin in solution as well as in brines with hide pieces. Halobacterium salinarium is not believed capable of strong growth in liquid media. It is suggested that gelatin or collagen are critical substrates for liquid media. It is suggested that gelatin or collagen are critical substrates for liquid media growth. Growth is very slow in liquid media.
In laboratory test and raceway trials hexavalent chromium proved to be an effective control agent for collagenolytic extreme halophiles. As little as 10ppm hexavalent chromium was effective in controlling halophiles in laboratory experiments, but dirty raceway brines required higher chromium concentration. Use of chromium in commercial operation may be regulated by local, state, or federal agencies, therefore such regulations and laws applicable to any particular operation should be considered before use. Other promising control measures include temperature control. These halophiles required high temperatures (greater than 30°C) to grow well and are destroyed by moderately higher temperatures (greater than 60°C).En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1pQsgKMAr7cuXf8tw5atm95ilfCYs1evk/view?usp=share [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9178

Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : A number of tanned cattle hides, thought to be primarily from animals slaughtered in the months from January through May on the high plains areas of Texas, Oklahoma, Colorada, Nebraska, and adjacent areas, have exhibited a defect, known as "white spots", in the enamel of the leather. To test the hypothesis that white spots can be caused by the early stages of a Psoroptes ovis infestation, cows were infested with either 50 or 200 mites at intervals of 3, 7, 10, 14, or 21 days before slaughter. White spots were detected only on blue stock hides from cows infested with both 50 and 200 mites for 14 days.Brown crust hides from the 50-mites infestations did not have white spots except for those from animals exposed for 10 or 14 days. The brown crust leather from animals infested with 200 mites for 10, 14 and 21 days were all blemished with white spots with the most extensive damage occuring on the animal that was infested for 14 days. Limited white spot damage was evident on the brown crust leather from one of the two uninfested control cows used in the study. Outbreaks of psoroptic mange have been most frequent during the months of November through March and have been most likely to occur in the high plains areas of Texas, Colorado, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Kansas. Therefore, there is a putative relationship in both time and space between the occurence of outbreaks of psoroptic mange of cattle and hides that are damage by the presence of white spots, but conclusive evidence of a cause and effect relationship between white spots and P. ovis is lacking. Titre : Thermofix thermal fixation and volume reduction of trivalent chromium-containing wastes and sludges Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Bradford H. Jones, Auteur ; Richard L. Alexander, Auteur Année de publication : 1986 Article en page(s) : p. 322-330 Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The handling and disposal of chromium containing wastes generated by leather manufacturing processes has been a major environmental issue demanding much attention, time and money. Most of these wastes are being landfilled. Sludge landfills are often controversial because the public is concerned about the generation of odors and the potential release of chromium into the environment. A more economical and environmentally acceptable alternative sludge management process, called Thermofix, has been developed by Jones&Beach Engineers, Inc.
Thermofix is a pyrolytic volume reduction and heavy metal stabilization process. The resulting char residue typically weighs about 20 percent if the weight of the wastes being processed. The char residue contains the heavy metals (chromium) concentrated and tightly bound within an insoluble (hence nonleachable) carbon matrix.
Extensive bench and pilot scale testing of the process has been conducted for municipal and industrial clients faced with the expensive disposal of heavy metal contamined sludges. Laboratory tests of the Thermofix products resulting from the processing of concentrated, chromium-laden wastes, have shown that leachables of the char generated by EPA's EP Extraction Procedure typically contains less that 5 percent of the allowed amounts of chromium. The resulting stabilized char residue can be stored, transported and disposed of without the risks and costs associated with handling Hazardous Wastes.
The Thermofix process has taken advantage of existing technology and reliable equipment to accomplish a new goal-metal stabilization and volume reduction. The components are easily transportable, packaged units, selected with an emphasis on relatively low cost and operational flexibility.
Tables present the approximate capital investment and the expected annual operations and maintenance costs. Laboratory data, including sludge bulk analysis, residue char bulk analysis, and EP Toxicity leachate concentrations demonstrate the effectiveness of the process.
The future prospects of recovering the chromium from the char on a regional basis will depend on market conditions. A potential, economic incentive to recover this metal would have to offset the investment in facilities necessary for handling, storage and transportation of the stabilized Thermofix char residue.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1bZJBg5PdiGAlZHF2uFVf_Fxb0I5cK2za/view?usp=share [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9190

Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : With the intention of utilizing solubilized keratins as a biomaterial, the solubilities of cattle and pig hair keratins were studied. Samples of hair were collected from steer hides and pig skins with razors and treated with sodium thioglycolate or performic acid. The effects of concentration of the reducing or oxidizing agent, incubation temperature and time on the solubility of hair keratins were examined.
The results obtained were compared with those of human hair reported previously. About 60% of steer hair keratins and 50% of pig hair keratins were dissolved in 0.1M sodium thioglycolate at pH 11 and 35°C after 24 hr incubation. When oxidized with 90% formic acid - 3% hydrogen peroxide, the solubilities of steer hair and pig hair keratins were about 75% and 50% after 6 hr incubation, respectively. When the residues from hair oxidized with performic acid were incubated 0.2M sodium carbonate, additional keratins were dissolved. The total amount was about 95% of steer hair and 90% of pig hair after 24 hr incubation.

Tannage Résumé : By using conventional reagents in a novel way, the “SIROLIME” process allows rapid removal of the hair from cattle hide in an essentially fibrous form with consequent major environmental benefits compared with conventional hair-destroying systems. A large number of successful trials, including regular production runs, have been performed with the process in tanneries throughout the world and have shown that, provided the basic principles are followed, the process is commercially feasible, can be adapted to the requirements of a particular tannery and produces leather of improved quality. The process is particularly suitable where the loosened hair can be removed continuously from the processing vessel during the hair-removal stage. The process can be adapted to stock other than cattle hide, recycling of the processing liquors is relatively simple and there are several variations to the basic process to allow even further advantages. Tannage Résumé : Polyphosphate pretanning is a part of the Liritan system of vegetable tanning. The effects of temperature and pH on the average chain length of solutions of two commercially used polyphosphates were studied. Thirty commercially available polyphosphates were analysed to determine their pH, total P2O5 content and average chain length (n). These are important factors which influence phosphate pretanning within Liritan process since they affect the subsequent vegetable tanning operation.
Hydrolysis of the phosphate polymer causes a reduction in its chain length and it was found that both high temperatures and low pH conditions increased the rate at which polyphosphates were hydrolysed. The survey of commercial sodium hexametaphosphates showed there were only small variations in pH values but a wide range was found in the average chain length which varied from n = 6.9 to 21.2.

Tannage Résumé : The process to obtain starch and tanning extracts from Canaigre, Rumex hymenosepalus, consists in getting, through a single procedure, both products simultaneously.
The most appropriate parameters to carry out these extractions were: temperature, concentration of sulfur dioxide in the solvent, and the time of contract between the solute and solvent.
The results of the simultaneous extractions were measured in terms of the efficiency percentage for both products; analyzing also, the influence of selected variables through experimentation. The temperature and concentration of sulfur dioxide had an important effect only on the obtention of the tanning extract.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1jtH_qTfeT1gA8Eh72kp7CjSBWf0QQtf2/view?usp=share [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9242
