Tannage Résumé : Due to the constantly increasing requirements and supervisory environmental agencies concerning the release of industrial effluents into receiving waters, industries are looking to property treat their effluents and to achieve efficient removal of contaminants. The leather industry is responsible for the production of liquid effluents with high concentrations of pollutants since most of the process steps are carried out in an aqueous medium. Due to the changes in leather technologies in recent years, it is necessary to know and analyze how tannery effluents vary according to the processing steps performed in different tanneries. This may be used to plan and design unit operations in wastewater treatment plants. In order to contribute to this purpose, this study presents the characterization of raw tannery wastewater and provides and discusses an overview of effluent treatment plants and some particularities of them. The raw effluents were characterized by analysis of pH, turbidity, conductivity, chromium oxide, chlorides, total hardness, total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), ammonia nitrogen, sakis (total, suspended : fixed and volatile, dissolved : fixed and volatile), five-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), phosphorus and total organic carbon (TOC). The test results of the parameters for contaminants for each type of tannery are related to previous researches and discussed. Note de contenu : - LEATHER INDUSTRY AND WASTEWATER

Tannage -- Législation -- BrésilIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The importance of livestock in the production of meat and dairy products, as well as the tannery activity that uses hides and skins as raw material, is widely recognized. However, a considerable fraction of the raw material is discarded or sent to other industries because of its composition or limited value in terms of leather manufacturing. Many studies were conducted to reduce, reuse, recycle or dispose of tanning process waste. Alternatives are being implemented to ensure the adoption of environmentally safe methods that meet environmental laws, and to raise the awareness of the professionals involved in the sector. Brazil reportedly has the largest commercial cattle herd in the world, is the largest producer of bovine cattle in the world and the world's third largest producer and exporter of leather. Other significant data, as well as other indicators of the sector are presented. The present study characterizes the brazilian industry regarding the leather articles produced, where the footwear articles are the main end-use of leather. A study in 224 brazilian tanneries was performed with the purpose of finding out which are the most widely used tanning processes. A typical representation of the wastewater treatment technology most frequently adopted in Brazil comprises the stages of preliminary treatment, mechanical and physical-chemical treatment, biological treatment, sludge treatment or disposal and nitrogen removal. the most advanced wastewater treatments and water reuse in tanneries, also the main uses for by-products generated in the leather processing are presented and discussed. The work summarizes the research lines and developments conducted at the UFRGS, at the Laboratory for Leather and Environmental Studies, in order to obtain information on the lastes technologies and improvements in the leather sector. We caught up with Kim Sena, Sustainability Manager at JBS Couros, who was instrumental in the development of Kind Leather, to discuss the importance of LCAs as a vital tool for process improvement. Note de contenu : - It is just over two years ago that JBS launched its Kind Leather concept. Can you explain what Kind Leather is, the key environmental benefits of this approach and how it differs from conventionally made leather ?
- There are tools that aim to evaluate the environmental impact of leather throughout its lifecycle, but JBS developed its own LCA (lifecycle assessment) to measure the impact of Kind Leather. Can you give more details ?
- Kind Leather has recently been added to the Higg Materials Sustainability Index (Higg MSI), run by the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC). Can you share some of those results? Why did JBS decide to follow this path with its LCA ?
- The Higg Index, however, has been viewed as quite controversial and many inside and outside of the leather industry feel that it unfairly scores leather and other natural materials compared to fossil-fuel derived alternatives. What is your view on this ?
- Would you say that LCAs are a useful tool for greater transparency in the leather supply chain and to help change the narrative and negativity around leather ?
- Leather from Brazil is sometimes seen by brands and other industry stakeholders as problematic due to links to deforestation. What is JBS doing to combat this issue ?

Much publicity around deforestation is focused on palm oil and soy, but there is no doubt that cattle is the number one driver of global deforestation.
